Mama Siren
"I don't understand what's going on right now," Mitch voiced shakily. "Scott?"
Scott took a glance in the rearview mirror, he could feel their stares burning into him. He swallowed hard at the frightened and puzzled eyes he was met with, feeling something resembling a dull pain run through his body. He never wanted to see Mitch and Kirstin upset, and he definitely didn't want to be the one to cause it. He only wanted to see the light and innocence they always held.
"Just relax, you're safe with me," he tried to ease, starting back down the road. "I told you that there were some things I haven't revealed to you, and I apologize for that. These two are not who you thought them to be, they work for me."
Kirstin and Mitch's faces screwed up in bewilderment. They grew up with Viola, and Lance was their friend. How could Scott be their boss? He had only been around for a little over five months and not one time had he crossed paths with Lance or Vi. Or maybe neither of them were present when their paths crossed. None of this was making any sense, but then again, this whole day had been a mess from the start.
"This is scaring us, Scott. How could they work for you?" Kirstie asked, exasperated. She immediately looked between the two that had just joined them, "How do you work for him? How do you two even know him?"
"You'll both understand everything soon," the white-haired man promised, attempting to catch his boyfriend's eye again. Mitch wouldn't quit blinking down at his hands though. Scott sighed. "We'll stop for lunch and I promise we'll answer any questions you have. Just sit tight."
Scott's informants nodded in agreement and sat back.
'Any idea what's going to happen,' Kirstie wondered to Mitch.
Mitch took a moment before responding to her, too busy trying to control his emotions. She'd feel his sudden bitterness and distress if he didn't. Kirstie would feel his lingering fear from what he'd done not even an hour ago and she would know that he was no longer sure about anything that Scott and him had shared together. Scott had been dishonest.
'No idea. But at least we're away from the house...'

Everyone was silent for the next two hours as Scott sped down multiple long and empty roads that seemed to lead them further and further into the middle of nowhere. The twins shared a few thoughts and glimpses here and there, but they were mostly thinking to themselves. Knowing that they were still on edge, Scott played the radio quietly for background noise, pleased that it succeeded in relaxing the twins to some extent. But he also took note of how Mitch accidentally began humming at one point and froze when he'd realized what he was doing.
Mitch was terrified of what came naturally to him. Scott wanted to reassure the boy's mind, but he was sure it'd be a process now. A long and tiring process. Maybe he should of thought this through more with Eliza; how was he going to explain what was going on without further hindering the trust he had built with the twins, with Mitch?
When Scott eventually stopped the car in the rocky dirt front of a huge cabin, he directed everyone to get out of the car and grab only one of their bags. They would just stay here tonight before getting back on the road in the morning.
As the small group gathered their things, a couple looking to be in their early fifties waited on their beautiful wrap-around porch with welcoming smiles on their faces. Kirstin and Mitch hesitantly trailed behind while Scott took lead and walked up to them, greeting them warmly with hugs. Lance and Viola followed suit.
