Chapter 1

I ran through the dark and dirty alleyways I could hear his steps as they got closer I pushed my self I had to get away right turn now left turn I had to get out of the alley maybe then I could blend with the crowd I ran and ran I could feel myself running out of breath but I couldn't stop stopping was the last thing I could do okay left turn this should lead me out I stopped no no this couldn't happen I came to a dead end I could hear his steady slightly labored breath as he walked up closer and closer to me I turned around "boy you sure have caused me a lot a' trouble" his thick gravely voice said as he got into my face I could smell the whisky coming from his unshaven mouth and I knew I had made a mistake maybe if I hadn't ran "please, Dad I'm sorry" I whispered trying to plead I knew it wouldn't help but what else could I do; he grabbed my arm and I let out a whimper of pain "now you lissen here an' you lissen real good" he slurred "I work hard fer this here family an' you need ta put yer part in to I can't have a son that thinks he can jus' get by in life easy now it's yer own fault that you didn't bring in enough cash so yer goin' to have to pay" I felt the tears streaming down my face "what are you a pansy now ya little fag crying you brought this on yer self" he turned me around and pulled off his belt I could hear it as he swung it back bracing my self for when it hit I heard a thump and when the hit never came I turned around there she stood Catwoman I could see my father on the ground his nose was bleeding and he was definitely unconscious I looked over to where she stood and I could feel a new wave of tears coming on I don't quit know what came over me but I ran the short distance and clutched around her waist I could feel her slight surprised flinch and then she hugged me back I stayed that way for who knows for how long though it felt like it was both forever and barely a second I looked at the ground "I'm sorry for the trouble I've caused you" I whispered I really hope that I didn't take her time away from something more important I heard her sort of gasp quietly "hey kid who is this guy to you" she asked looking at me with a sad face "he's my dad" I said looking at the wall I was ashamed that I was related to someone like him that I had to be saved I knew it was wrong what he did and I should leave but where would I go "hey my names Selina what's your name kid" she said kneeling down to my height "I'm Jack why do you ask" she took off her goggles and I looked into her eyes "how would you like to stay with me for a bit Jack" I couldn't speak I had been waiting for someone to say this to me for years but I was frozen I finally had a chance to leave this hell and I didn't know what to do I could feel a smile making its way to may face and I let out a sort of laugh all the while nodding my head "ok" she said grabbing me into a sort of hug and using her whip to bring us to the top of the building "follow me."

I slowly sat up in my bed I could smell bacon and eggs being made in the kitchen Selina had said that there was something she was excited to tell me in the morning.  I walked to the fancy kitchen and sat down on a chair I was cushioned and had a bit of cat hair on it "so what did you want to tell me Selina" I said yawning and taking a sip of the glass of milk I had been handed just a moment earlier.  I could see an excited smirk on her face as she grabbed out some papers "now you have been staying here for about a week now and I thought it was about time that you legally stayed here and I was wondering how you felt if I where to adopt you" she had an eyebrow raised and a smile plastered to her face I set my milk out of the may before leaping over the counter and bringing her into a hug as she almost fell over I said "yes 10 billion times yes oh my gosh you're the best!"  She sort of chuckled as I got off of her "ok well then you're going to have to put a suit on and we are going to go to the court house to get it made official I have already worked everything out I just have to get this to them"  I smiled "ok but why do I have to wear a suit" I scrunched up my face "I've heard their uncomfortable" she laughed at that "there will probably be press their I tried to keep it as down low as possible but they always seem to find a way to know when something is happening."  We quickly finished our eggs and bacon before getting dressed and heading out 

We had just gotten to the court house and it seems like Selina was right there was already a bunch of reporters and people with cameras standing by the doors and it seemed like there was more coming "her Selina to be perfectly honest I'm kinda nervous to go out there with all those people" I said hoping I wasn't disappointing her.  "Hey it's going to be fine" she reassured as she grabbed my hand and gave it a quick squeeze.  We stepped out of the car Selina first then me I could feel my face starting to burn at the amount of attention that was on me as I tried to hide behind her while we made our way through I could hear them shouting questions asking my name, age, where I came from, and other weird questions like if I was single and my dating life.  When we finally got inside I was relived to be out of the crowd and spotlight I looked over at Selina "I don't know how you do that all the time that was exhausting and I just had to walk behind you through the whole thing" she just smiled "you'll get used to it, now come on lets go make this thing official!"  We walked down the long halls that where a lot more normal looking than I had imagined for a place that would change my world but I suppose I didn't expect my whole world to be flipped upside down in a dirty old alleyway either.  We walked up to a receptionist looking  person and handed her the papers she had me come up and sign on a line and print my name on another well my new name that is I had asked if I could take Selina's last name and she had loved the idea Jack Kyle my new name, I loved it.  That was about all we had to do and we got to leave though the only problem was that the amount of people outside had seemed to double if possible great.  We got through the crowed the same way we did last time the same questions and more had been shouted in our direction neither of us giving them the time of day too excited to go home and celebrate by watching Netflix and eating ice-cream.

"Do I really have to go to school" I had been adopted just yesterday and we where already getting me ready to go to Gotham High a prep school with lame uniforms and snotty rich kids "yes we talked about this" Selina sighed as she finished getting herself ready to go to the school "buuuuut MoOoOm do I have to" we both stopped she started to smile as I felt a rush of red to my face "I mean if you don't mind me calling you that its just you kinda are now and you know I just-" I was cut off from my word vomit with a hug "yes please call me mom, and you do have to go come on it's not that bad" she said finishing up getting ready.  She turned to me "Okay you ready to go" I smirked "yeah yeah Mom" we both smiled to each other as we left the apartment.  I looked over at Mom "but what if nobody likes me or I make a fool of myself or something bad happens" she looked back at me as we got into the car "you'll be fine and if people decide that they don't like you they are obviously stupid because you're amazing, and anyways I have work so you would be home alone if I did let you stay home" I sighed "I've been home alone before and Mondays suck we should both petition them and stay home and sleep in" She laughed a bit "yeah I don't like Mondays all that much either but we still have to do our jobs or go to school, and anyways I have a surprise for you if you want it but it wont be ready till after school so you might as well go and get the first day over with it has to happen at some point."  I sighed loudly and as dramaticly as I could "fineeeee I suppose your argument makes sense I guess I'll go" and if by magic we pulled into the school parking lot at the exact moment that I said that.  I was rushed out of the car with a kiss on the forehead and handed my backpack "bye love you have a good day at school" Mom called out before I closed the door to the car and it pulled away leaving me at the front of a large school.  I started walking to the school when a kid that looked to be about my age ran up to me, he had tan skin and was defiantly shorter than me he had the prettiest blue eyes too, he stopped running once he got up to me and pulled out a few papers "you're Jack right, hi I'm Richard but all my friends call me Dick yes I do know that my name sounds funny and I have heard all of the jokes, I'm supposed to show you around" I was a little startled at how fast he told me all this but I quickly recovered saying "Hi um I'm Jack but you already knew that I suppose" I could feel my face blush as he handed me a schedule and he started to lead me through the court yard to the front doors of the school and he pointed out different landmarks.  We had gotten about half way to the doors when I heard someone yell "DICK wait up" we both turned to see a red headed girl run up to us "hey what's up you must be that new kid people where talking about" I rubbed the back of my neck "yeah that's me I'm Jack" we all kind of just stood there for a minute in an awkward silence "ohh yeah" she exclaimed "my names Barbra now" she started, looking over at Dick "are we going to show him this place or what."  

They had finally finished showing me where every thing was and we had finally gotten over the awkwardness too when we heard the bell ring "ok well I'll see you both at lunch then" Dick said to us as Barbra and I both said words of affirmation and walked off to our first classes.
