Every athletes' dream is to make varsity.
Not everyone can make it.
Every freshman comes in wide eyed.
Hoping they're ready.
Yet saying they are.
I was that freshman.
Who always got told that I wasn't good enough.
I came to tryouts.
I worked my ass off.
The seniors talked to me.
Yet all didnt like me.
I was put on J.V.
Kinda let down.
I became a leader.
The coach was impressed.
And told the Varsity coach.
One day I got pulled up.
Not half way through the season.
Three games into regular season.
Varsity players had gotten injured.
My spot was not secure at any time.
So I worked.
I knew that everyday I came out onto that field.
I could be told that I was sent back down.
So I busted my ass.
I started my first game.
I hit like I should.
played my thirdary position like I should.
The newspaper said "The team was forced to bring a freshman up."
Yet they weren't forced.
They chose me.
I started a few more games.
Then slowly became a bench warmer.
Which is fine.
I have to pay my dues.
I got put in for the girls with attitude.
I never left the field in a clean uniform, usually.
I sat the bench for two full post season games.
Never played in a post season game.
Yet this year I will.
A starter.
Behind the dish.
Because I worked.
I was that freshman.
Who was ready.
Who knew she was.
Never was cocky.
Never bragged.
Never believed I was the star on the field.
Never will.
We work as a team.
I was just a freshman on that team.
Who later was mentioned in the newspaper.
With my last name first and my first name last.
I couldnt care less.
I was in the newspaper.
As a freshman.
This year.
I'm one year older.
With a letterman jacket.
A focused mind.
To be that catcher.
Who leads us to a championship.
I know my school deserves.
Because they won it sixteen years ago.
When I was born.
I am the leader.
It wont be seen.
But known,
I am that girl, who got what she deserved.
