He was my dark angel, my gentle savior. He was my nighttime visitor, the lover of my soul, the keeper of my heart. God, he was my everything. He was the reason I breathed, he was the reason my heart beat. I adored him. I worshipped the ground he stood on and anything he asked of me I did eagerly and without question.

This alone was my down fall.

Or I guess you could say that many things lead to my demise. I mean my situation could not have been entirely my fault, could it? Was I solely responsible for this sick joke of fate? These were questions I asked myself constantly, and these were questions to which I had absolutely no answer.

I could blame my sheltered life or the absence of love in it, but that really hardly seemed fair, people had gone through far worse than I had. No, this was my fault and mine alone. I had let him in against my better judgment. I had opened the door to him-literally and figuratively- and now here I was crouched on the roof of a grimy building thousands of miles from my small town home looking down at the unsuspecting people. No, they had no idea that there was a monster in their midst.

My mouth ached in a way that I had grown accustom in the past few months. I was hungry, and I loathed myself for it. My eyes cut through the darkness and scanned the alleyway below me watching in mild distaste as a rat gnawed at the rotting corpse of a homeless man. I continued looking until my eyes happened upon a young man maybe in his mid-twenties with skin almost as black as the night. He was in a mechanics uniform, his muscles bulging where he had rolled the sleeves.

I licked my lips slowly as I watched the man take a short cut through the alleyway just below me. I was transfixed by the steady pulse thudding away in his throat, the vein throbbing slightly under the dark skin. I felt something sharp against my bottom lip and before I could change my mind I jumped from the roof of the seven story apartment building and landed quietly on the damp pavement.

He was a bit ahead of me, walking calmly, his head turning every now and then to make sure no one snuck up on him. I stared at the way his neck flexed every time he turned his head, it was simply mouth watering. I was now shaking with need, my muscles were tense and in one lithe movement I sprang, attaching myself to his back and fastening my teeth to his thick neck.

He tensed and like any human would, began to struggle; which, to my dismay, only seemed to arouse me as he bucked like a horse trying to get me off his back. I reached out to his mind and calmed him, though a sick part of me wanted him to keep struggling. I took a deep drag and moaned involuntarily as the hot blood filled my mouth and slid down my waiting throat. One of my hands was one his shoulder, the other holding his head firmly to one side so I could have better access to his throat.

Stop, I thought to myself suddenly.

I took another deep pull.

Stop, now! I thought more urgently, Jesus Maia you're going to kill him!

It took all of my will to pull away, but I did. He was unconscious now so when backed away he fell to the ground. I wiped the back of my hand across my mouth before lifting him easily over my shoulder.

I ran to the hospital in what was easily five seconds and dropped him on the ground before doubling back and shrieking loudly to get the attention of the nurse. As one ran over cigarette in his mouth I pointed to the man on the ground and put my other hand to my mouth pretending to be shocked and terrified. The nurse dropped his fag and ran to the man while I melted into the darkness.

I was walking down the street a black hood covering my face from the slight drizzle when I heard a slow clapping. I spun quickly a hiss ripping its way up my throat and stopped short when I saw who it was.

"Award winning performance, my dear. Honestly, I nearly believed you myself," he said, pulling down his hood so his golden curls could spring free to frame his heart-shaped face, a cocky smirk tugging at the corners of his full red lips.

I rolled my eyes and continued walking, no matter how much it irked me leaving my back exposed to him.

"Leave me alone Deston," I said softly, though I knew he heard it, it was practically a scream to our sensitive ears.

"Oh Maia, love, I'll never leave you alone," he answered just as quietly and I didn't miss the threat in his words. I didn't miss the way his voice sent shivers down my spine and made my hairs stand on end and not in the good way. I didn't miss the way he chuckled at my response, or the slight shift of his body. I didn't miss any of it, so when he pounced I was already long gone.
