Kayla gave an annoyed sigh and sank onto the sofa. She and her cousin couldn't stand each other, so why was he here? And why did he think it was a good idea to bring along his nuisance of a girlfriend? She shook her head as her cousin came out of the kitchen.
"Hey, why're you in here?" he asked.
"Because you two are in there," Kayla told him. "Why are you even here, anyway?
"If we're here, then that Jim isn't," her cousin replied as his girlfriend waltzed in.
"C'mon, baby, I thought we were going to snuggle tonight?" she said, walking over to him and rubbing his shoulders. He smirked at her as he took her hands in his.
"We will, just give me a few minutes with Kayla, okay? We are in her house after all."
Well, no one asked you to be, Kayla thought bitterly.
Her cousin's girlfriend shrugged and left the room, and he turned back to Kayla.
"Why are you even with Jim, anyway? You know we all hate him."
"That's because you are all blind and ignorant. Jim is a better person than our whole family combined, but none of you see that because you're so self-absorbed!" Kayla snapped before standing up.
Her cousin stood up as well. "At least we know what we want in life. We actually have a chance at being successful, unlike that lazy oaf you call a man!"
Kayla's eyes narrowed, and her fists clenched. Without a word, she pulled on her shoes and coat and opened the front door.
"Where are you going?" her cousin called.
"Away from you," she called back.
"It's late!"
"See if I care!"
He continued to call after her, but she only slammed the door shut and left the building. The next thing Kayla knew, she was in front of Jim's door. He appeared seconds after he knocked, and he pulled her into his home immediately.
"What's wrong?" he asked, sitting her down on a chair.
"My house has been invaded," she replied shortly.
"It's that cousin again, isn't it?" he said knowingly, and when she nodded, he pulled her into a hug.
"Let's escape," Jim suggested with a small smile as he pulled Kayla out of his house and into his car.
"Where will we go?" Kayla asked. Jim shrugged.
"Wherever the wind takes us," he replied as he started the engine and pulled out of his driveway.
A half an hour later, the couple found themselves pulling the car into the sand at a beach. Jim pulled Kayla out of the car and they climbed onto the roof of the vehicle.
Laying side by side, the two gazed at the stars, Jim playing with a strand of her hair.
Kayla sighed contently. Why don't they ever see this side of you?
"Why does my family hate you?" she asked him.
"I don't know," Jim replied. "I'm too wild, I guess."
"Or they're too proper," Kayla added. The couple sat in silence for a moment before she continued. "I'm nothing like them."
"Then why don't you leave?" Jim asked.
"This city is my home," she replied. "I've lived here my whole life, I could never leave it."
"Then move in with me," Jim suggested, looking at her. She looked back at him, surprised.
"Really?"
"Sure," he replied. "They'll never want to come visit my place. Besides, then you'll never be alone."
Kayla smiled at him. "You're sweet."
"Then it's a yes?" he inquired hopefully. Kayla kissed him.
"Definitely."
