Chapter 15: Entering the Nest

I kicked up a cloud of dust as we trudged through the woods, Anders raised an eyebrow at me but didn't say anything.

I had to leave my friends at the Keep, I couldn't save everyone. I had to save the innocent people. Maybe Oghren held them off.

I tried to reassure myself but it wasn't working, I had abandoned my companions to die and it would haunt me the rest of my life.

"Katria," Anders sighed as if he knew what I was thinking, I held my hand up and my gaze didn't falter from the path.

"We have to kill this creature and get to the Keep." I said quickly as I lowered my hand, Anders stared at me for a moment and nodded.

The sun was blotted out by dark clouds, the trees were tapering out and the ones that remained were dead and tainted by the darkspawn. I shivered as the frigid wind swirled around us.

"This is going to be fun, I can already tell." Nathaniel chuckled nervously and glanced over at me, I puffed out air and looked around at the surrounding. There was a ruin that stood at the end of a barely visible path that had been taken over by roots and thorns.

"That's where we need to go." I pointed at the ruins.

"I can feel it too." Anders walked up to my side and looked over at me with a smirk, I rolled my eyes.

"Ready?" I glanced over my shoulder to Justice and Nathaniel.

We walked carefully down the beaten path and into the ruins, there was a door on the far side.

I jumped as a shriek echoed through the valley and a black object was set against the clouds, approaching fast. My shoulders dropped.

"Dragon!" Justice called as he unsheathed his sword and readied himself.

I winced slightly and grabbed my bow.

"Stay back a bit." Anders said, looking over at me worriedly. I nodded, I knew I couldn't fight that thing right now.

I grabbed an arrow out of my quiver and quickly pulled the string up against my cheek as I waited for a clear shot, the dragon dove into the ruins and slammed against the ground. I found the eye of the creature and loosed my arrow. The dragon bellowed out and searched for who had sent the arrow.

Anders lifted his hands in the air and thunder rolled through the valley and dark clouds quickly came in, lightning struck all around the dragon. Nathaniel loosed several arrows into the head of the dragon and Justice jabbed his sword into it's ribs.

The dragon swung it's arms through the air, slamming into Anders and throwing him against a wall. I watched in horror as Anders fell onto the ground, limp.

I pressed my lips together and unsheathed my daggers, twirling them in my hands into a reverse grip. I smiled at the corner of my mouth and charged at the dragon, dodging one of it's arms by dropping down to my knees and sliding across the ground.

"Nathaniel! Fire an arrow!" I called.

Nathaniel nodded as he understood what I was doing. He loosed an arrow into the elbow of the dragon and I quickly grabbed it and jabbed one of my daggers into it's neck, earning a shriek. Nathaniel fired another arrow into the creatures neck and I ripped my dagger out of the dragon and swung up onto the head of the dragon. I held my daggers in the air and stabbed them into it's skull.

The dragon stumbled around, bellowing in pain until finally collapsing. I stood talk on the dragon's head and hopped off.

Anders was staring at me, I smirked and sheathed my daggers, hissing at the pain that was running through my body.

"Let's go find the Mother, shall we?" I asked, Anders chuckled and nodded.
