Hanamura was, generally, quiet and peaceful. The Shimada clan had branches everywhere, and that kept things silent. Not that (Y/n) minded, anyways, she was up all night constantly either way. The young woman was a manga artist, and she tended to work the best at night, so her schedule was flipped. The perfect night owl. How she spent most of her days, or more rather nights, was on the top of one of the older abandoned apartment complexes with a notebook, rapid-fire sketching ideas.
Until then, her life was fairly monotonous. Same schedule, same food. Her drawings were the only real unexpectedness she ever happened across- her work was renowned for its unanticipated twists and dark imagery, and coupled with the hauntingly beautiful artwork, she was a bestseller.
But it was spring in the city of Hanamura, and the sakura trees blossomed and left their petals scattered across the various streets and sidewalks. There was a light breeze, and it was quite pleasant out, the cloudless sky making the moon that much more stunning.
The light pattering of footsteps caught her attention. She didn't move, however, sighing and continuing to rest her head on her knees. (Y/n)'s sketchbook was cast aside amidst the cracked concrete.
"So, who're you?" The young voice asked brusquely, settling down a few feet beside her. When she did turn to face him, her expression didn't change. About her age, he had brightly dyed green hair flopping around and an orange and white outfit looking suspiciously similar to what the Shimada clan classically was found in.
She shrugged, trying to search for stars in the polluted sky in vain.
"I'm Genji. What's your name?" He asked again, more pressing this time. His tone made it seem obvious he was arrogant and used to being pampered.
"(Y/n)," she replied, deciding to humor him and blinking owlishly. The boy nodded, swiping up her work and inspecting it by moonlight, quickly skimming through the pages.
"Ooh, this is really good!" He exclaimed excitedly. "Can you draw me?"
She shrugged once more, her words muffled a bit from her oversized hoodie. "If you want. Might take a while, though."
"That's fine, I have all night!" His response was bright, and he handed her the book and sharp pencil, grinning. "It's nice to meet you, (Y/n). Home is really boring, and I'm not even allowed to leave half the time! Only on special occasions. I bet you don't have to do that, do you?"
"Uhh… no, I don't," she answered distractedly, glancing between him and her quickly-forming sketch.
"I mean, sorry if I'm just coming on really weirdly and complaining. But you seem nice. Peaceful here, but I wish I could leave Hanamura. Maybe even Japan," he huffed glumly. "I'm working on my English. Can you speak English? Nah, probably not. I can say basic stuff. My brother makes fun of me for my accent, but he's not even that better. He just doesn't like me because I'm younger than him…" The relatively young man was frowning, but continued to rant.
This went on for a few minutes, (Y/n) nodding and piping up where she needed to. When he stopped talking, she looked at her watch. "Genji, you should probably be heading home. It's late."
He squinted at her. "What about you? Don't you need sleep? Why are you up here anyway?"
"I, uhh… usually work at night, so I take naps during the day."
"What time is it then?"
"Two AM. Have a good night's sleep, won't you?" She waved him off with the beginnings of a smile.
He jumped away, onto a higher roof. "Will you be here tomorrow?"
"I don't see why not. See ya," she said, but he'd already disappeared. She sighed in disappointment, gathering her things and the portrait she'd finished during his talk, climbing down a ladder and walked home to her apartment. It's not that she wasn't confused by the entrance of the stranger. (Y/n) just shrugged it off, as she'd been told she needed to be more friendly and deemed this an alright way to talk to people. Not that this had ever happened before- sure, she'd seen figures leaping across the rooftops, but they'd never approached her before.
Sleeping that night was effortless, opposed to her usual insomnia. She didn't wake up until the afternoon.A/n- Apologies for the short start, but I'm still trying to get my footing with writing and stuff. My pal wanted an x-reader either way, so... having an actual character to write is pretty distracting, and I can never get it right. Oh whale.
