A grinding sound woke Malvolio from his sleep. He didn't bother to open his eyes, he had gotten used to the unexplained sounds generated in this room. He had been in here for so long that he hardly was surprised any more. He had stopped counting after five years. The sound came again, and he continued to ignore it. By the fourth time his curiosity had peaked. He slowly got up from his bed, he could feel the grit of dried dirt that crusted in his crevices over all these years.
The sound came again. The room he was locked in had no windows, he hadn't seen the light, artificial or natural in a long time. He longed to feel the heat of the sun on his face but he knew he would never get to again. He had been a fool a long time ago. He almost laughed at how stupid he had been. His arrogance and greed was the reason he was in this god forsaken place in the first place. The grinding had finally stopped and just as he was about to go back to bed the room began to shake. He looked around in alarm. What the hell was going on? Just then a blinding light pierced the room. It lasted for about five seconds then faded to a warm glow, standing a few feet away was a tall man. He was oddly dressed and seemed to be emanating the glow.
Malvolio stared stunned. The two men stared at each other observing.
Then more gracefully than a man should be able to, his hand floated in Malvolio's direction. It was as if by just looking into the strangers eyes he knew what he had to do. Malvolio hesitated, he knew if he took the strangers hand his life would be irrevocably changed. His gaze strayed to the door then back to the stranger. He thought of Olivia's face and for the first time in years the thought of her didn't make him grimace. For a split second he hesitated was it really worth it? He would lose his humanity. His resolve strengthened and he lunged for the strangers hand and into his new life....
