Chapter 5
Kai sits between us, giving me a barrier in case Saxon goes back on his word and tries to help his brother to come up or take me down to the ground.
"You heard about the earthquake a few months back?" He asks.
"It decimated the whole state of California, over four million died in it."
Worst earthquake to hit the world in many years. It's been three months, and still, they are finding bodies in the rubble surrounding the state. It was foretold nearly four centuries ago that California would break off because of a quake, making it its own island. The humans were right about how large it would be, though they couldn't have imagined how destructive it would be. The land didn't float away as they predicted, it sank to the bottom of the ocean, taking all its people with it. We can only be thankful how many Californians moved away from the damaged state throughout the generations. Four million is better than forty.
Though, it does seem as if Earth isn't too happy with us lately. With the plague wiping out over a hundred million humans two hundred years ago and again forty-two years later our population has been cut in half. Not to mention the Arctic blizzards that forced everyone out of the Midwestern states, making it all uninhabitable eighty years ago.
"We lived at the bottom of Oregon and feared our homes would collapse and fall into the water as all the others did. Doing research we found this place and decided it would be the perfect location to build our new homes," Saxon says matter-of-factly.
"Roarke didn't know about me until you came here a month ago?" My stomach rumbles, making Saxon chuckle.
"Hungry?"
"I little bit."
"What do you like to eat?" He questions. "And no, Roarke did not know you were here. If he did, you wouldn't be up here without him."
"Chinese food sound delicious about now. What do you say, Kai?" I look at Kai as he gives a curt nod to Saxon for his agreement. "If one of your pack member's contacts the restaurant tell them we want the usual, they will know what it means."
We wait the few minutes for Saxon to contact someone in his pack as his eyes glaze over. His hand grips onto a post as if he believes Kai to push him over the edge while he is otherwise occupied. Kai isn't that rude.
"Why would he be up here if he knew her before moving here?" Kai probes, his eyes never once leaving Saxon's body.
Saxon's gray eyes snap to us once more as he cuts the link with his pack member. "All Roarke wants to do is hold you, Lexi. To shower you with the love and care you deserve. If you let him come up here, he will cuddle up with you, keep you warm and relaxed, nothing more. Now I believe it's time I ask a few questions to catch up. Why did you come here, to this tree house of all places?" He genuinely seems interested in my answer.
"That's an easy one. It's been my haven for the past three years. The guys built it for me during my time of mental isolation. Once I began to gain my life back after being rescued, I needed a place which would calm me down. This is that place. I come here to think or play games with my brothers." I nod at Kai to inform Saxon that is the position Kai holds in my life. No way in hell will he learn anytime soon that Kai and I used to screw around, that's asking for Roarke to kill him.
"Rescued? From who?" He snarls, his eyes flickering between gray and black. Loud roars reach my ears from below. His shoulders tense when his eyes glaze over. Is Roarke contacting him? "Answer me, who did you escape from?"
I don't know why I used that word; routinely I refuse to acknowledge it out loud as it's a fresh reminder of what happened to me. What I try desperately to forget daily.
