He gazed out the small window beyond the horizon of the setting blood-colored sun. Staring blissfully he caught a glance of something in the sugary clouds-her.
The train was cold and drafty once the sun set. The heaters didn't seem to be working and windows would easily fog over with breath. People began to wrap themselves in blankets, jackets, husbands and wives, girlfriends and boyfriends, coiling together like snakes in attempt to keep from the icy atmosphere.
He just sat there, unmoving, his chin resting on his hand, and his cheek against the cold glass whilst he gazed through his scarlet colored eyes out the window, occasionally dismissing the fog created by the warmth of his breath.
"Is this seat taken? It's cramped in the back and I noticed no one has taken this spot. Would you mind if I joined you?" he turned to face a well-built woman with peach skin, greenish-blue eyes and long, coal colored hair smiling, holding a pillow and a thin blanket.
"Sure, it's no problem." he nodded as he turned back to the window.
"It's cold now that it's darker. I see you're watching the sun set?" she turned to face the window.
"Yes, the last of it," he glanced over at her. The girl's pale face was painted with rose and a cold thin button nose.
"I love watching sunsets and sunrises!" she took out a computer from her jet black backpack, "see?" She faced the computer screen towards him and slowly he shifted his body towards her and her computer.
"Woah.." he stared in awe at the surreal images she had opened on her laptop.
"Yes! I take pictures, and then redraw them so I can capture the meaning it has. At least to me."
"You are talented." He nodded while observing the images.
One stood out from the rest, it was almost familiar. The sky was a grey violet and a river of glowing blue ran from a mountain into a golden forest.
"Thank you!" she quickly exited out of the programs and gently closed her laptop, "oh! May I ask what your name is?"
"Yoru." He turned back to face the window. There was complete darkness outside now, "my name is Yoru."
"Yoru.... mine is Kaida. It's nice to meet you Yoru!" She nodded cheerfully.
Yoru nodded.
"You don't talk very much do you?" she chirped as she put away her laptop and wrapped herself in her thin blanket from before. The blanket was the thin cotton material the train provides for you in the seat pockets.
"No." his cheeks were red from the cold. "I prefer not too."
"You look cold too." she said worriedly.
He turned to face her "No. I'm fi-" she cut him off.
"I have an extra blanket" she held out a well-stuffed cotton blanket from her red backpack, "you can use it." she smiled softly.
She had brought her own thick blanket, and yet she uses the barley useful thin sheet from the train.
Yoru stared blankly for a while. Why is she being so kind? she is so much like....
"Oh. I-I'd rather not" he began to say.
"No I insist!" She gently squeaked a laugh as she took the blanket and wrapped it around him.
His pink face began to redden as he stared blankly at her loose flowing hair.
"What was that?" she inquired.
"Nothing, thank you." He attempted to smile and quickly turned back to the window.Her......
Soon after she fell silent, quite strange for such a talkative woman. He turned to glance over at her. Asleep? Maybe. He finally found a comfortable position and slowly closed his eyes as exhaustion crept through him. Just as he slipped into a dream he felt Kaida's warmth place a pillow under his head and against his back.
Why so much kindness from someone you just met?
