I take a shaky breath and reopen my eyes. This shouldn't be happen. It shouldn't be humanly possible, but it's happening right before my bare eyes. Andy Cullen, a student in the volleyball team at my highschool, was completely made up of shapes, almost like he was pixelated but different in a sense I couldn't explain. I couldn't even see the usual, readable expression on his face. In the mits of my shock, I subconsciously grab one of the bats and before I knew it, I was bashing his head in with said bat. Others gathered around, horrified and shocked of what I was doing, and someone, whom I now assume was Angus since I never really knew him in highschool, tried to pull me off of Andy.
"Dude..."
Gregg stared at me with concern stinging his voice and expression.
"Are you alright?"
"Honestly, I don't know anymore."
I feel my own lengthy tail slowly curl and wrap around my leg, which is what it usually did when I was terrified. I hadn't shared my side to the event I was talking about to anyone, but here I was, rambling about the brutal and traumatizing experience. I was scared, and I'm assuming that Gregg sensed it somehow, since he had sat up and place a paw on my tail to help calm me down. His sudden movements made me jump out of my fur and open my eyes to stare at him with my crimson orbs. My muzzle curled into a gentle smile and Gregg returned it , closing his eyes shut when he smiles. The sudden scent of rich brownies filled the apartment like smoke in a small, isolated room. The scent made both Gregg and I drool and our stomachs now craved for more. Angus was probably the one making the brownies, since we could hear his contentful humming as we hear the oven shut.
"Smells good, Angus!"
Gregg exclaimed with excitement laced in his voice as Angus comes out of the kitchen with a tiny plate full of heated brownies and he sets them on the coffee table near us. The humanoid bear shared a sly grin that was focused mainly on his boyfriend. I could see a glimmer of concern when his eyes met mine, Angus probably overheard me talking to Gregg while he was in the kitchen.
"Mae..." Angus began, a gentle sigh escaping his throat, "Are you really going to be alright? If this... Thing... Is a mental illness, then we can try to help you."
"I've already gotten help."
"Dr Frank doesn't count. He can just stick to dentistry that he's actually good at."
I huffed, crossing my arms like a child that just got in trouble. Taking a brownie from the plate and bitting into it, Gregg glanced over at me with eyes that drew daggers into my fur.
"Please, Mae, just let us help you."
"But why? Why do you want to help me?"
"Because we care about you, Mae."
I only sat there, trying to think of a response but only failed to do so. As a result, I reluctantly grabbed a brownie and plopped it in my mouth. After a few moments, Bea sleepily walks in the living room and takes out a cigarette. Of course, she wasn't going to light it when she was indoors so she only placed it in her mouth to taste the deadly ingredients that lie in it. I've always admired her for that, risking her life only to puff out smoke and whatnot. Sure, it was unhealthy but you can always admire a smoker who has perfectly clean lungs despite years of it. I've always guessed that Granddad died of smoking, since he himself was a heavy smoker and one days was found cold on the floor. I wonder if I'll become a smoker one day, but I shook that thought out of my head before it got to me farther than I would let it. I take notice of the taste of the rich brownie I held in my paw, how sweet it was of Angus to make such a treat for only the four of them if you didn't count Germ. He didn't have to make it, but I assume he makes things for us because of his mother. His mother always took food away from him when he was younger until he just moved out one night. His brother did the same, but after Angus had already left. Snapping back to reality, I notice that Angus and Gregg were no longer in the room and I assume that they went to sleep together. I must have spaced out for a long time as Bea had already been ten minutes in on a show she recorded on the old television that sat in front of the couch that we sat upon. Bea seemed to have noticed me snapping back into the real world, as it had become almost routine by now, and she gave me a sly grin like any crocodile would.
"Welcome back to the real world."
"Oh, I'm already tired of it after three seconds."
Bea jokingly rolls her eyes and glanced back up at the show that was playing. It seemed to be a show about a medical thing, but I was too tired to really pay attention to it. I quickly picked up my phone and read the time of 1:38am, setting it down and letting out a muffled groan. I slowly crawled into Bea's lap, which she reluctantly was fine with it, and curled up in her lap. And just like that, I was asleep, but not for long. Around 4am, I woke up and noted that all of the animals in this apartment room were asleep so I carefully climbed out of the crocodile's lap and hugged my sides as a slight pain hit me like a brick. I place a paw on the door handle and slowly twist it to open it. I hushed my voice so no one could hear me before I walked out the door and into the street.
"Bye, guys."
