Chapter 3
Things were great for about three months. Damian and I dated, I still got into trouble (though less than the usual), and I tried to ignore my mom’s warnings of “it’s not gonna last” as best I could.
But something felt wrong.
In the pit of my stomach, I knew exactly what was wrong. I just could never admit it to myself. I was scared that if I confirmed it, it would become a reality. To me, once it was never said out loud or thought of, it didn’t exist.
However, some things just can’t be put off for too long.
I was walking to school when it happened.
“Hey, I gotta talk to you,” Tristan said as he sidled up next to me, matching my pace.
“Shoot,” I replied nonchalantly, already expecting exactly what he wanted to discuss.
“Well… we haven’t hung out in a while. And, I mean, a while. As in three months. As in around the time you started dating Damian. I don’t want to be straightforward, but I’m gonna be anyway. You’re abandoning your friends now that you have a new boyfriend. There, I said it.”
Damn, my worst fears confirmed.
“Alright, I’ll admit that it’s true. I have been pushing both you and Sara away, and for that I am terribly sorry. So sorry that I’m gonna make it up to you both by taking you guys out tonight. My treat.” I smiled at the last part, knowing by the expression on his face that he was already hooked by my idea.
“Okay, but do you have to bring Sara?” he asked, his expression pleading for my cooperation.
You see, Tristan’s not really the type to hang out with juvenile delinquents. Except for me, of course. I’ll never understand how his mind works.
I huffed out a sigh, “Fine. It’ll just be you and me. We’ll go somewhere and have fun together, just like we used to.”
He nodded in agreement, and I stretched up on my tip toes to hug him around his neck.
He leaned down quickly to kiss me on my forehead after we parted, a gesture so unexpected I almost backed away in surprise.
But I didn’t, for fear of hurting his feelings.
“So I’ll see you tonight, then,” he said, turning his back to me and walking away.
I nodded my head slowly, watching him as he walked away.
…
I made it to school a little earlier than I’d planned, but I didn’t care anymore the moment I saw Damian’s face.
“Hey baby,” he greeted, leaning down to plant a small kiss on my nose.
“Hi,” I returned, leaning up to kiss his lips.
I felt his arms snake around my waist as I wrapped mine around his neck. We stepped backwards until we were met with the hood of his car.
Damian pulled himself up onto the hood, placing me in his lap, our lips still together. I felt him begin to lean back until he was lying down on the hood of his car with me lying down on top of him. It was only when I began to feel his hands trailing up my shirt that I realized we should stop.
Pulling away, I got off of the car and straightened out my clothes.
“Listen… I gotta head to class, but I’ll see ya later?” I said, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek before basically running to class.
