"Many people say history can repeat itself. Others say that's total crap. I think history does whatever the hell it wants. There's no set example of one of those ideas. Sometimes, it seems like it's leaning one way, and a minute later, it's the other way. For example, the wars that have already happened. Take the Revolutionary War and the Civil War of America. I imagine people thought that a second war would never take place in America every again. However, surprise, it did. See what I mean?"
"I guess I do see your point," exclaimed my friend, Josh. "I just don't see how this topic came up. We were just talking about running away to escape being signed up for the war."
"Oh sorry, I wanted to start this chapter out slightly mysterious. Just forget I said anything." We're standing out in a field in southern Canada. It's mid-summer, so we are in shorts and t-shirts. Josh has been my best friend since grade school, so we are sometimes considered to be twins by our parents. At least, we had been. That was before The Glimmering. The Glimmering was the worldwide spread of the deadly disease, called Replorius Alkalomona, but I like to simply call it Repalo. It began in 2124, and killed off half of the world's population. This may remind some people of a book, The Maze Runner, a classic, but it's much worse when it's real and not in a fictional book.
My mom was killed in the original wave of Repalo. Josh was left alone in the world after his father died of the disease, and his mom hung herself, wracked with grief. My dad was taken from my little home and sent to work as a soldier in the upcoming war against the only populated moon of Jupiter. Who knows where he could be by now? So, yeah, now Josh and I are alone in Canada, escaping the Finders, people who search for teenagers eligible for war.
We set up camp after travelling all day. I hope to make it to Mexico, where Seth Schmidt, our "lord and savior" has his personal home set up. I want to find out the status of my father, and Josh is coming along so I don't get lonely. Yep, he's the best friend a guy like me could ever have. We set up the tents we stole from where we had originally been placed in, Toronto. We gather around our fire we made from burning our old money, which has no more use. Suddenly, the ground surrounding us lights up with the brightness only a spotlight could produce. We look into the blinding light and see the outline of a helicopter. The Finders have done their job... They found us.
