"No!" Nick yelled . He sat bolt upright in bed , bathed in cold sweat, his heart hammering in his chest. "Today in Vancouver, a mostly warm, sunny day . . . " the radio DJ announced.
Vancouver. I can't believe it's almost been a year since we moved here. Nick looked at the alarm clock-9:30 a.m. His eyes immediately darted to the green textbook next to his clock. He knew he should fill it in, follow this little ritual his dream-specialist psychiatrist had been making him do all year to help improve his sleep, to keep the nightmares away . By writing it down , he was meant to relive all the horrifying details blow by blow , just so they could "explore" it in their sessions. Yeah , it's working pretty . . .
With a sigh, Nick picked up the book and started writing down what he saw and remembered in his nightmare. A friend called Nora-she had blonde hair, blue eyes. Looked about twenty five years old . His handwriting was shaky but he focused on what he was doing, he steadied his hand and started recording what he could . As he recalled the rest of the nightmare he felt details slipping away, becoming lost to the waking world, so he wrote in a scribbled frenzy. He finished by writing "the Last Ones" the underlining and circling it for emphasis. . . The Last Ones what?
Nick placed the notebook back on his nightstand and sat on his bed, resting his forehead on his hands , elbows , and knees , scrunching his carpet between his toes. His straight black hair was wet from him sweating and his heart was racing as if he had been running. But the wrongness of the nightmare was almost tangible , and he knew it would keep him on edge all day long. The bedroom door opened. Nicks dad , Jayden , was standing in Nicks doorway. "Come on , Nickolas, you're going to be really late for school"
"Yeah, I know, ill hustle it up" Nick replied
"Your Mother and I have made breakfast for you"
Nick nodded.
Nicks dad turned to leave, but Nick saw him hesitate. Kimmey, the chocolate Labrador, ran into his bedroom and tackled Nick to his bed.
"You okay?" Jayden asked
Nick looked at him. "Yeah I'm okay"
Jayden watched Nick play with Kimmey, then looked over to his notebook.
"Did you have a bad dream"
"Yeah"
"Did you make your notes?"
Nick nodded. Nicks dad looked at the book like he was confused, but then he put down the notebook without asking questions.
"Well, you should get ready for school now"
"Okay, Dad"
But his dad just stood there patiently, watching him. "Do you want me to cancel your football practice tonight?"
"No, I'll be fine, it would be nice for the quarterback to start going to practice again"
Jayden nodded and then left
Kimmey's cute face stared up at Nick, friendly-like, playful, and somehow always understanding how he felt. Nick tried to remember more of his nightmare , but couldn't at all, it had already faded into nothing. The psychiatrist his parents had sent him to , Dr. Peterson, who had said it would be easier for his nightmares to go away, if he would write down, what happened in his nightmare, which hasn't really worked out yet. . . Through analyzing his notes , Nick could supposedly learn to control where his dreams took him. Somehow through that, he'd have fewer nightmares. Yeah, right. Three months later, and his terrors still terrorized him and woke him up every single night, but yet he still didn't remember anything but a few small details, like running away from a man. . . A man on fire. . . It was always the fire that awoke him.
Nick walked into his bathroom, he got into the shower and got out before the egg timer on the soap dish went off. His mother, Caroline, was trying to save water. Maybe a longer shower would calm me down, give me fewer nightmare, thought of that Mom? In the mirror, Nick looked for changes, but he was still average height, average build, gray eyes, and black hair. Mr.Average. The scar from the accident was still there, though, but Nick was hoping for a six or four pack and pumped up guns. He had been playing football to help tire him out and sleep better. . . But there was nothing to show for it at all. Maybe, when I turn twenty.
"Maybe when I get bit by a radioactive spider,"
Nick said to his own reflection and he frowned. In his room, he threw on a fresh school shirt and a fresh pair of pants.
"Nick, this is your last chance to come and eat breakfast!" Nicks moms voice shook dhroygh the house , a saw in an out of hi own skull.
"BREEEEAAAAKKKKKFRRRREEEAAASSSTTTT!" His mom said again.~~~• ~~~~~~•~~~
Nick sat at his kitchen table. His 17 yr old brother, Niklaus, was actually next to him, eating his breakfast, which was scrambled eggs and bacon with sausage.
"Thanks for breakfast Mom" Nick said . He poured a glass of orange juice but he wasn't paying attention, momentarily lost in a daydream, and let the liquid overflow.
"NICKOLAS!Really, not again!" His mother yelled as she quickly cleaned it up. Bits and bits of the nightmare were trickling through his mind, distracting him.
The fire alarm went off, making Nick jump, his mom ran over to the gas stove and turned off it off and pulled a towel and whacked the fire out. "It's okay, son" Jayden said then Nick sat down at the table and started eating while his parents sat opposite of him, observing him like if they were waiting for him to confess something " Nick are you ok?" His mom asked, Nick didn't reply, he was still lost in the memory of his dream. "Nick" his dad said
"Yeah?" Nick all of a sudden snapped out of his dream and looked up "Is something bothering you?" His mom asked "I'm sure your sorry about the towel and the fire starting but it was nothing, really it was nothing". "I'm fine mom and dad" Nick said. "You didn't have a nightmare right?" His mom asked "I-I had another nightmare" Nick said "Nightmare..." his parents remained curious "About what? The fire again?" "No,it was about.... this man talking about 'The Last Ones' Nick started to eat his eggs "Are you going to tell us more" his dad asked "No" Nick said "Was it a new dream last night?"
Nick Nodded
"Did you write it down?"
Yeah, I tried to at least"
Nick's parents glanced at each other. Nick's brother threw a piece of toast and it landed on Nick's shirt "Nick you should go clean your self up" his mom said, so he went to go change.
~few minutes later~
When he got back he saw his parents worried looks "Nick what did this man look like?" His parents asked "well I think it's was a man. It was tall and had a special suit , all black, fully masked... kind of looked like he was shimmering." "Keep going..."
"He shot fire out of his hand and he was able to stop time and this figure wanted something...but I can't exactly remember what he wanted but it was something about a prophecy.....a crystal ball and something about 'The Last Ones'. I remember him clicking his fingers and everything was on fire then there was a big blast of fire then all of a sudden it got bright then I woke up. Is that good enough for you two?" He said "you know we are only trying to help you get over these nightmares" his parents said "Well I'm trying to get over these nightmares but they keep coming back!" Nick yelled "Fine. Go get your things, I'll drive you to school!" His dad said "and I'll make a appointment for you.
Nick went to go get ready for school but he couldn't believe that his parents believed him.
