Getting Better

Ant woke up about two hours after falling asleep, feeling even worse. Everything hurt, it felt like his body was on fire. He felt someone hugging his arm and his hand being held.

"Mom?" he cried. He felt his left hand being squeezed so he turned his head and saw Dec laying next to him, tugging his arm in his sleep. Ant turned his head and saw Anne sitting in the chair next to him.

"Hey, sweetie." she said softly. "How are you feeling?" A worried expression overtook her face.

"Everything hurts. Mom, make the pain go away." he whimpered. He became more aware of the pain in his body and let the tears fall. Dec woke up to the sound of Ant crying.

"Don't cry, love. I'll go get a doctor. Dec can you keep an eye on him?" Dec nodded and Anne ran out of the room in search of a doctor. Ant tried to sit up once again but fell back down into Dec's arms.

"It's okay." Dec assured him. "Mom will be back with a doctor and she will make you feel better." he promised.

"Where's Sarha?"

"She's with dad in her room. She was starting to get tired so he took her back and stayed with her. I heard you were in a car accident. Were you scared?"

"I was asleep. I don't even remember it. All I remember is waking up in here."

"You're lucky. I'm glad you're back."

"I'm glad I'm back, too. I missed you guys."

"We missed you, too. So did Stephen. We have to hang out when you get out of here." Ant looked at his cast-covered leg.

"I don't think I'll be playing football anytime soon Decky." he chuckled.

"Of course not, silly. I meant movie, video games, arcade. You know, things we could do at home."

"You didn't tell me we had an arcade at home." Ant said in a sarcastic tone. Dec scratched his head.

"Okay, maybe not that last one, but the other two, definitely." he laughed. He missed this. Ant and Sarha, he was glad they were back. He couldn't wait until Ant could come home. It would take a while but it was worth the wait if it meant he had his best friend by his side.

Two days later Sarha was allowed to be released from the hospital. The day after that, she went back to school, so did Dec. Since everybody was either at work or at school, Ant would get bored. Nurse Millard would wheel him down to the playroom so he could chat with kids his own age.

One day, Ant was laying in bed watching TV when the door opened, and in walked Stephen holding a bag. Connected to the bag were a bunch of Get Well balloons.

"What are you doing here?" he asked in shock.

"Nice to see you, too." Stephen shot back.

"I am happy to see you--I just wasn't expecting to see you." Ant replied.

"Your mom called my mom and told her what happened, she told me, and I begged her to let me come and see you." he said.

"You didn't have to." Stephen gave him the "Are you serious?" look.

"I know I didn't have to, I wanted to, because we're friends. I got you something by the way." he passed the bag to Ant. Ant opened the bag and in it was a sandwich, a bag of crisps, and a can of soda along with books and magazines. Ant looked back up at him with a huge smile.

"Thanks! I may have only been in here for a couple of days but I am absolutely tired of eating the hospital food. It's worse than the school food."
