When I was 8 years old the teacher put a Venus flytrap in our classroom. Everyone thought it was amazing. Everyone but me.
How could they all sit there and watch insects get killed?
The teacher moved it from table to table each week, mine was the last table. When she put the pot down I was horrified to see a spiders legs caught in the plant, alive, trying to fight for freedom. I couldn't watch. I tried to pull it out when the teacher wasn't looking, it got half way and she saw what I was trying to do. She yelled at me to stop.

She told me that now she didn't know what to do, and went on about the circle of life and all that. But all I could get out my mouth was "It's still alive... I was trying to help it!"

I spent the whole of lunch in detention. Next to the boy that punched Alex in the face yesterday. I saw the boy who spat in Mr.McGreggers face. I saw the girl who painted the walls pink during art. I wasn't supposed to be here. I only tried to save a life. Not anything that dissevered punishment. I did what any decent person would do. I did the right thing.
