The Fire

I layed on the soft grass, the light dancing before my eyes and the stars above my head.  I growled happily as my sister cuddled into my side and my mom rubbed my head.

"It's so cold, son. Go fetch some sticks." I watched mom tell my brother, Lore, to go get more wood for the fire.

He came back with a huge bundle and handed then to mom for her to put in the Fire.

The Fire was magic. It talked to me, told me to lay down. For once, I listened and I am glad I did. I've never been more relaxed or warm.  It was so comfy and suprisingly not burning.

"Listen to me, Jak. Play with your sister. Play with Luu. Bite, tackle. Bark, growl. You'll be good and listen, yes? Your mom will be happy." The Fire spoke again.

My eyes lit up and I wagged my tail and tackled Luu, barking playfully. I licked and nipped at her nose and neck. I never broke skin but got close.

Then she screamed and mother yelled at me to stop, get off and go away. I looked at her in shock then jumped off Luu and curled up before the Fire. Luu was crying and mother was cursing. That didn't make her happy!

Yes it did, Jak. She doesn't like Luu, she wants Luu to leave. You were a good boy, she just can't reward you in front of her children. The Fire told me again.

I wagged my tail softly. Yay, I'm a good boy!!

A very good boy. Go play with Lore now, Jak. Go on.

I happily jumped up and ran to Lore, knocking him out of his chair. Woops. I licked his face and barked happily. He screamed though. I didn't know why.

Mother hit my nose and chased me off into the woods. She told me not to come back. I whimpered but obeyed her.

The Fire went out and as it did, I woke in the middle of the woods. I don't know how I got here or why. Where was mother? Where were Jak and Luu!? I was alone.

I found our camp ground. It was all packed and gone. The Fire was gone. But as I looked to the now brightest sky I had ever seen, the Fire danced in the sky.

I suddenly realized and remembered everything.

The Fire needed power. It got power from hate and fear. It convinced me to play with my siblings but I did it wrong. I scared and hurt and angered them and they left. I was the last one he needed to use to be able to control the skies and people.

I layed down and whimpered. I layed there, mad but not hating the Fire that cost me my family.

I layed there defeated but no longer angry, no hatred or darkness in my heart. I was still and eventually I died...

But I didn't die completely. I turned to stone and dirt and rose in a ball to the sky. I battle the Fire that is now called Sun for hatred to die and love to rejoice. Every 'day' he starts wining. Every 'night' I have the upper hand.

Wolves and dogs, purebred and mutts alike, howl to me. Those with good hearts howl good wishes and blessings while those who fell to the Sun howled words of hatred and anger. I was egged on and pushed back.

But I will never stop battling the Sun for love and darkness to win. For darkness and love are alike, not love and light like you think. Darkness fights the hot flames that terrorize and destroy.

I am the Moon who will forever battle the Sun for power. One day, one of us will win and the world will be sent into either darkness and happiness or light and hatred.
