I got off my bike and locked it in front of the store. Another old habit that dies hard from living in New York. Too many thieves and in general assholes there.

I walk in, eyeing the shelves of food and other general groceries. It's like a fucking mini mart. Jesus Christ, at least it's organized. I check the grocery list in my hand and grab a basket. 'Chicken, eggs, milk, ground beef, peas, gravy mix, chips, fish sticks, tater tots, and snacks.' Great.

I find almost everything and am checking off my list when I walk directly into a girl with purple and blue streaks at the tips of her black hair. The carton of eggs that I had in my basket crashes to the floor and I hear every egg break when I land on my ass.

"Fuck! Oh my god, I'm so sorry. I'll buy you a new carton of eggs." The girl says.  She's got a little bit of egg on her Sherlock shirt and a bit more on her jeans.

"No no, you're fine. I didn't pay for them yet, but I can go get a new one. I just need to let someone know that we need cleanup on aisle..." I look for the sign as I get up and make sure the rest of the stuff in my basket is ok. "Seven. Huh. I never thought it would happen. I like your shirt by the way."

"Thanks. I'll go let someone know, it's fine. I'm so sorry. Hey, you're the new girl, aren't you? I saw you at school."

"Yeah. Abigail Stevens. And you are?"

"Twyla Davidson. Nice to meet you. I'm gonna get someone to clean this up. I'll see you at school Emberly." She mumbled, walking away. I picked up my basket and walked to the dairy section before going to checkout.

"Hi, did you find everything you needed?" The smiling cashier with a name tag that said 'Annie' on it asked me. She looked like she was in her late 40's with greying hair.

"I did, thanks Annie. How much do I owe you?"

"15.60, do you need bags?" Her smile and stare were penetrating my soul and I tried not to make eye contact for two long. I knew she was going to tell all the town about the new girl.

"Yes please. Do you take debit cards?" She nodded and pointed to a little machine in front of me.

"Yes, swipe your card there."

I finished the checkout process and grabbed my bags, walking out of the store and going to my bike. I put the bags on my bike and rode home. I put the groceries away and started dinner. I made sure that I could put tonight's food in the oven so I could go do homework and relax after my day.

I went to my room and grabbed pajamas so I could take a shower. I grabbed the hoodie I had worn to school and grabbed the slip of paper that fell out of the pocket.

"The top one is mine, the bottom one is Winter's." I muttered to myself, recalling Louise's words. I typed the numbers into my phone, adding new contacts for people that I probably wouldn't talk to again unless I was at school. I threw away the slip of paper and went to take a shower.

By the time I got out of the shower, my mom was home and dinner was ready. I got downstairs, prepping myself for the 20 questions game about my day at school.

"Hey sweetie. How was your first day at  the new school?" My mom asked. She was piling food onto a plate.

"It was fine. Long." I said, explaining my day, but leaving out chunks of details that she didn't need to know.
