You Are My Sunshine (a Solangelo short story)

Nico di Angelo lay on his bed in the Hades cabin, his arms folded behind his head as he stared up at the ceiling. Generally, he hated to be alone in the Hades cabin, as he had no cabinmates. But sometimes it could be a good place to reflect, read a book, take a nap, or just get some quiet time. Camp Half-Blood could be quite chaotic in the summer – well, extra chaotic, anyway. The camp had been pretty empty earlier that year, but once summer hit, there was a sudden flood of campers, some returning for the season, and lots of new ones. Mostly, those new ones were younger kids, who Nico found really hard to interact with. They were so happy and boisterous, excited and extremely energetic – not to mention how awkward he was even around people his own age. Nico just didn't know how to handle them. So, yes – Nico was hiding from little kids.

Yeah, he wasn't a fan of the intense sun or the heat, either, and the Hades cabin was always pleasantly cool. So if he somehow ended up getting asked why he was in here, then that would be his reason. No way was Nico admitting to anyone that he was afraid of children. Well – it wasn't like he was afraid of them!! They were just... little... anti-Nicos.

Nico eyed the ceiling with his dark brown gaze, as he had been doing for at least a couple hours, maybe pretty much the entire morning (or maybe even the entire day; he wasn't really sure, he didn't have a watch). He didn't really like being alone, even if he really seemed to want to be. He wondered what Will was doing. Nico hadn't seen him once today, and Nico didn't like that. He'd never admit to himself that he missed the beautiful, blue-eyed demigod.

Nico tried not to let his thoughts stray onto Will Solace too much, lest he start really thinking about the handsome, suntanned face, the teasing, lopsided smile, the golden hair, those eyes—crap, he was doing it again. Nico scowled and rolled over, unable to deny to himself that his cheeks were pinkening. Stupid son of Apollo. No matter what, that boy was always present in Nico's mind, regardless of how far away he was – in fact, the farther away Nico got from Will the more he seemed to think about him, and the more Nico missed him. Maybe the worst part of all was that deep inside, Nico didn't really mind that his thoughts kept turning to Will at all. What he did mind was that he hadn't seen Will at all that day. Yes, let's go back to thinking about that.

Nico considered where in camp Will might be. It was impossible to say, and Nico was just about to actually get up and brave the sun and little kids when the door to his cabin burst open. SLAM!

"Yah!!" Nico shrieked in alarm, sitting bolt upright and staring incredulously. There, in the doorway, huffing and puffing, was just the man he had been thinking about.

And Will looked like he'd been put through the wringer.

More specifically, he looked like he had been tied to the leg of a one-winged pegasus that had gone on a rampage through the camp, fallen into the lake, and then torn through the forest.

"Will!" Nico exclaimed, leaping to his feet. "What happened to you?!!"

"You have no idea," Will growled, lifting his head to stare at him with a deep scowl etched on his face and his sky blue eyes burning. Nico flinched. He had never seen Will like that. Normally, Will was happy, cheerful, joking around in that insufferably endearing way of his.

"Will?" Nico asked waveringly, but Will violently tore what looked like had once been a life jacket off of his chest and threw it against the wall, making Nico flinch again.
