"What prophecy?" Arietta asked confused.
"There is a prophecy that says that when a child of Ignis reaches her seventeenth year, she will be the first human and first girl to be a dragon rider." Jefferson replied worriedly.
"You must be mistaken. I can barely ride a horse, let alone a dragon!" she replied frightened.
"Arietta, how old are you?" asked Blade cautiously.
"I am sixteen years."
"When do you turn seventeen years?" asked Logan
"Six weeks from know." She replied hesitantly.
"Well it takes three for a Dragon to mature fully and months to train one and war is brewing in the east. If Arietta is the girl in the prophecy then she must leave with us in the morning." said Klauss.
"Hold on. I can't just up and leave as if I've got nothing to keep me here. I've got a brother and a sort of job and a life. You expect me to just up and leave like just like that?" Arietta was confounded at the notion. She had lived her entire life in Ignis and was more than hesitant to leave it behind.
Jefferson appraised her with a look of cautious respect and replied "It is of course your decision and if you choose not to join us that would be understandable; however, we don't know if you are the one the prophecy but the possibility that you are is bolstered by the fact that you've found a dragon in your garden." He was far too reasonable for her to think logically so she went to her room.
When she closed her door Alenada, after being silent for quite some time startled Arietta by speaking up.
"I believe you should go with them, if not for their sake, for your own. I can see your mind and your life, you are bored here. Ignis cannot give you the adventures you seek and you know this."
Arietta knew she was right and told her as much before beginning to ready her things. She took a satchel and in it she put breeches, stockings, and blouses because if dragon riding and war were in her future, dresses weren't going to make the cut.
When she had finished she climbed out of her window to sit on the roof above the kitchen. From there Arietta could see all of Ignis and beyond, to the Black Forest, where she had lost her parents all those years ago, to the shore of Lake Melba where Aaron had taught her how to fish. She could see the blacksmiths shop where she and Marion had snuck into her Marion's fathers mead and drained the bottle and then laughed too hard as they tripped down the cellar stairs. She could see the stables where her mother used to take their leftovers for the stable boys so they could eat before they're shift started. And she could see the churchyard where her parents were buried together in a single plot after the townspeople found what was left of them.
There was not a doubt in her mind that she would miss this place of love and loss but she also relished the idea of leaving everything behind and going on grand adventures with the ragtag bunch of boys downstairs. She had made up her mind to go with them and she wouldn't be able to stop herself if she tried.Authors note* it's been 3 years since I've even touched this story so I apologize if anyone has been waiting that entire time for me to update but my life got about 10000% crazier after I posted the first chapter. I hope to start posting regularly in the coming weeks so look for consistent Wednesday updates and if I fail to meet a deadline please remind me. Thanks.
