The world hasn't always been the way it is now; wars, famine, disease and poverty affecting everyone on the planet. The Golden Age of mankind had ended in a bitter closing of the curtains as the last great nations of the world closed themselves off, hogging the last major resources on Earth.
In the year 2023, the news industries in every country exploded in terror as they all believed that the war of the resources would ignite in an atomic flame; but nothing happened. The U.S cut themselves off from the world and the United Kingdom had a complete breakdown due to lack of food and water and other various resources. They had drained Scotland dry of fresh water and left it to rot, eventually they felt the backlash. Russia and China began quarrelling with each other over a large proportion of drinking water until they dissolved into the air and only remnants of the old empires remained.
The U.S was what remained of the world and it would stay like that unless a miracle occurred, say the old nations somehow sprang back to life and came together as one humanitarian superpower, uniting and rebuilding the world's stability.
Humans had inevitably exhausted Earth and the only way forward in their evolution was the stars, the vast wonders of the cosmos and the billions of planets just waiting to be set foot on by human life forms but no, they are stuck, stuck in the dirt on the old planet that they once loved, many years ago.
