Dark and Stormy Night

Bright green eyes.

“Here honey, go get some ice-cream.”

She gave me a few dollars, a warm smile, and a peck on the cheek.

Oh god.

I broke off the kiss, mumbled a quick ‘sorry’ and escaped.  Back in my room, threw myself face first onto my bed.  “Oh God. Oh God. Oh God,” I mumbled into my pillow. I knew I shouldn’t have run off on Jason, I just couldn’t help it when the memories came. God, I needed a distraction.

I grabbed my bag and headed out.

*******************************

It was crammed in Joey’s and the smell of sweat hung in the air, but the music was loud and the drinks were cheap. I headed over to the bar.

“I need a whisky, Joey.”

Joey was wiping down the bar, but at that he looked up.

“I don’t think that’s wise Sable,” he stated.

“Just give me the bleeding drink! I need to relax,” I snapped.

Without further comment he slid a glass toward me and proceeded to fill it with glorious gold liquid.

I gave him the money and took a sip. I sighed.

“Sorry for snapping,” I said “It’s been a long day.”

“I got that. Wanna tell me ‘bout it?”

“Not really. How are you and Eve?”

“Good,” he smirked, “Eve set up a bookstore off Dobbin Street. You should pop down sometime.”

“Sure,” I replied. And with that I finished my drink, and went to the dance floor.

Joey and I had an agreement. Ever since I saved his witch girlfriend Eve from a group of demons (that were very hungry for magic), he’s let me into his bar.  As long as I didn’t get caught and my fake ID met police standards, it was fine.

As I danced and weaved through the throngs of people, something caught my eye.

A man sat alone at the end of the bar. He must have been easily six foot tall and had muscles that were a little harder than most gym memberships usually accounted for. That’s not what drew my attention though. It was how hard he was trying not to be noticed; his hood was pulled up and he was slouched over his drink in a way that screamed “I’m not important, don’t look at me.” I actually did look away.

It had to be magic. But it was a brand I’d never seen before.

I peeked back over, but he was gone. Dammit!

Follow me,” a deep voice whispered in my ear.

I turned around. Oh God.
