Chandler's POV
When I noticed the wolves, yes. I pushed Amelie down. I ran away and I heard her screaming in pain. I wanted to go back for her, but I knew it would be pointless. I couldn't go in there and save her without being attacked myself. My best option was to go to the village and get help.
Unfortunately, I tripped and I hit my head on a rock. I woke up an undetermined amount of time later with some of my memories missing. I didn't remember anything that had happened that day. I was able to find my way back to the village, and, upon my return, everyone asked me where Amelie was.
I remembered asking her to meet me that day, but I couldn't remember actually meeting her. Amelie's parents, Maurice and Clarice, asked me what had happened to her. When I denied any knowledge of her whereabouts, which was the truth, I was immediately accused of harming her.
Search parties went out into the woods in all directions, but no one found a trace of Amelie before dark. Everyone returned to the village by sundown with plans to search again in the morning.
Those plans were cancelled when Queen Mother Anne-Marie came riding into the village just before midnight. She looked horrified, and she couldn't manage to say any words other than "Come quick!" Half of the people in the village, including myself, mounted horses to go and follow Queen Mother Anne-Marie.
When we reached the edge of the woods and the clearing where her castle stood, the Queen Mother pointed to the ground ahead of her.
It was Amelie's mutilated body.
"I came to visit the grave of Jeanne after dark this evening. I sat near her grave and I started singing a lullaby. All of a sudden, I heard a tortured-sounding little girl's voice singing the lullaby. Naturally, I went to investigate the source of the sound, and I was met with the sight that you see now. She must have died as I was looking around. I don't know how this happened for certain, but I would say it was wolves, judging by the scratch marks and the bite marks," she tearfully explained.
As soon as she said 'wolves', my memories returned.
"Are you able to identify her?" the Queen Mother asked the crowd of mounted men. Maurice dismounted and he walked forward.
"My daughter......Amelie," he said before collapsing in a fit of sobbing. The rest of the tearful men looked at me accusingly.
"What happened, Chandler? You were with her!" someone screamed.
I explained what had happened. The group of forty or so men who weren't me or Maurice split into four groups. One group of men thanked Queen Mother Anne-Marie for locating Amelie. Another helped Maurice mount his horse. Another group loaded the majority of Amelie's body onto a horse, and the last group targeted me. As the other three groups left, the group that targeted me had stayed behind. One man found some rope in a travel bag that was loaded on to his horse, so they immediately tied my hands behind my back. I was loaded onto another horse and we rode off, with my horse galloping behind after us.
When we got to the village, it seemed that the rest if the men had already spread word of what they saw to everyone. Before I knew it, everyone in the village was calling me a murderer and they said that I should be killed for my crimes. I regretted pushing her down and I explained that it was just a reflex in order to save my own life.
Amelie's family was given the choice of whether or not I should be put on trial for the death of Amelie. Shockingly, they let me go on the condition that I left the village and I never returned. I agreed, and I left less than an hour later. I never got the chance to say goodbye to my family, but I was certain that they wouldn't want to see me.
I went to the castle and I begged the King and the Queen Mother for a job working for them. I guess the Queen mother took pity on me, because I was given a job working as a cleaner. Eventually, I would be cursed, along with the rest of the castle, and I would turn into a chandelier. But that's another story. It's the famous story.
I heard that Amelie's sister was born perfectly healthy, and that Maurice and Clarice went with a name that would honor their deceased child.
Belle Amelie Simon.
