I picked up my bag from beside me, flinging it onto my shoulder. I walked out of the classroom with the rest of the students, following them down the hall. As soon as the stairs came into view, I pushed the door open and headed down to the main floor. I would normally go to my locker before heading downstairs but today was different. It's Friday! The day I stay after school.
You may think I was being sarcastic, but I'm not. Every Friday the music teacher lets me stay after school until four-thirty so I can record my songs. By recording I mean we have a recording station in the music room. Awesome, right? I use it to practice for what I want to do when I'm older. Yes, I want to be a singer, but I doubt it's going to happen. For the time being, I post videos on YouTube with my version of the song.
I didn't know whether I wanted to sing Drunk by Ed Sheeran or Kiss Me Slowly by Parachute. While trying to decide, I absentmindedly found my way through the crowded halls to the music room. I opened the door to find it open, as usual and walked in. I was expecting to see Mrs. Canyon sitting at her desk, but instead she was pacing back and forth in front of the white board.
Not knowing why she was acting this way, I decided to ask, "Mrs. Canyon? Are you alright?"
She quickly turned her attention to me, and looked.....excited? And.....relieved? She quickly stopped pacing and walked swiftly over to me. As soon as she was within arms reach she put her hands on my upper arm and looked at me.
"I have to run to my son's school to pick him up, he's not feeling well, but the problem, is I have guests coming to meet me here. So, do you think you could keep an eye out for them and tell them to wait a few minutes? They should be here in about ten minutes and I should only be about twenty minutes. Please?" She looked like she was practically begging me. I knew she was because I was insanely shy!
Now I know what you're thinking. You're extremely shy, but you want to be a singer? The thing is I'm a completely different person when it comes to being on stage. I feel like a whole different girl up in front of everybody. Music is like my get away. Noticing that she was still looking at me, I slowly nodded. The look on her face completely changed to an excited, happy smile. Wow, weird? Yes. Creepy? Slightly.
She let go of me and ran over to her desk. She grabbed her keys off the desk, her coat of her chair and ran back to me. We hugged quickly until she took off out the door. Catching a quick glimpse out the door, I saw the halls were already empty. Well, it's Friday so I'm not really surprised.
I looked back around the room. Music posters, quotes and pictures hung on the walls. Most of the pictures were of the school band or different students who entered into music class. I walked over to the wall covered in pictures. There were a few students that were repeatedly in different photos, but the thing that always caught my eye was the huge smile Mrs. Canyon wore in every single one. I smiled just looking at how happy she was teaching students music.
Taking my attention away from the pictures, I wandered over to the recording station. I put my bag next to the door on the floor and plopped myself down into the spiny chair. Pulling out my iPod, I hooked it up and looked through my songs for Kiss Me Slowly by Parachute. Once I found it I paused it, got up and walked into the recording room. Luckily with this room, there are buttons to play, pause, stop and restart a song. It's so cool!
I took a deep breath and relaxed, placing the headphones on my head. I closed my eyes and focused in on the silence. Not seconds later my fingers pressed the play button. Music flooded my ears as the karaoke version played.
-_-
I just finished going through the song a second time, so I decided to go out and grab my water, my throat was starting to get a little dry. I put the headphones down on the mic stand and walked out. Just as I pulled my water out of my bag, a knock on the door made me freeze. Sugar! Those people must be here. I was kind of hoping that they would be late and Mrs. Canyon would be here to talk to them. I quickly took a sip of my water before placing it on the floor and rushing over to the door. I didn't want to keep them waiting in case they were from the board office or something. That would not be good for Mrs. Canyon.
Just before my hand grabbed the doorknob, I took a deep breath closing my eyes. I opened them just the same time I opened the door. I pulled it wide open and stood looking at the person in front of me.
No. Fudging. Way.
