Chapter 10

Chloe

I was ten minutes late to meet Kaylee. I wasn't dressed, had no make-up on, and was lying on my hotel bed like a slug. Half of me wanted to go get a few drinks, get my mind off things, the other half of me didn't. That half wanted to keep going over Jace's murder again and again, which was basically what I was doing at that moment.

I had gone over every detail of every fact I knew about the case. There was nothing I'd missed, yet I couldn't stop obsessing over it.

I jumped about a foot in the air when my phone buzzed. Groaning, I reached across the bed, grabbed it, and read the text.

"Where the hell r u? Get ur ass down here or im gunna come find u and drag u to the nearest bar."

The message was from Kaylee.

"Give me a minute." I responded and got up.

Ten minutes later I walked into the lobby to find a very pissed off Kaylee sitting in one of the chairs.

"Took you long enough," she muttered. "I was about to leave without you."

"Well hello to you too," I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Shut up," she said, but then smiled. "I'm real sorry, Clo."

She didn't need to say it, but I knew she was talking about Jace.

"Thanks. It's hard, you know? I mean, you think you're gonna spend the rest of your life with that person, and then they're gone. Just like that. And the cops won't do anything, and they're saying it's a suicide, and..." I trailed off, my words getting caught in my throat. My eyes burned, and I collapsed into Kaylee's arms.

She held me up and forced me to look her in the eye. "Then you find out who did it."

"I'm trying. I've got some help, but I don't know if we'll figure this out or not."

"You will." Kaylee shook my shoulders a little, gave me a soft slap, release me, and turned around, yelling, "Let's go get drunk!" at the top of her lungs.

I rolled my eyes and followed her.

We walked a few blocks before Kaylee found a bar that she deemed suitable for us. She sauntered in and I followed behind her, rolling my eyes, as she sat at the bar and started flirting with the bartender. Less than a minute later, Kaylee slid a beer in front of me.

"Drink up," she said, taking a huge swig of her drink.

Kaylee had kept me hostage at the bar for almost three hours now, even though there was nothing I wanted to do more than to leave. She, however, ignored my protests against staying here and proceeded to get herself pretty damn drunk.

I was still sitting at the bar, still sipping my first beer, and looking around the bar when I spotted a familiar face.

Getting up, I made my way through the crowd into the bar and sat down next to Jesse. Jace's best friend was staring at his drink, tears brimming in his dark eyes.

"Hey, you okay?" I asked.

His head snapped up. "Oh, hey, Clo." His voice was sad, melancholy, and at first he didn't answer me, and I didn't think he would, when he said, "I miss him."

He and Jace had met when they were three. He had known him longer than anybody, even Derek. He had to be hurting so bad right now. "Me too," I responded and was about to say more when Jesse cut me off.

"Do you remember the day he met you?"

"Yeah," I said, slightly confused by his question. "I tripped into him, and he caught me."

Jesse gave a slight smile. "I've never seen him happier than on that night. And the next day, he kept going on and on about you. How he couldn't believe he hadn't asked you your name. How he had to find you. Then he did. Find you, that is, and he started dating you, and he was the happiest he'd ever been. For the first few weeks, he wouldn't shut up about you. It was actually pretty annoying. Anyways, my point is, I never thought that I could love anyone as much as he did, and then--" he cut off, shaking his head. "You know what, never mind, it's stupid."

"No, tell me," I said. "I want to know."

"You'd better go get Kaylee over there before she screws that guy in front of the whole bar."

I looked where Jesse was looking and saw Kaylee and the bartender from before making out passionately in the corner.

"Aww crap. You're right. We'll finish this conversation later, okay?"

"Sure," Jesse said, but he didn't sound very promising.

3rd Person

Jace's killer laid in his bed, the lights off, listening to the silence around him, thinking. He had successfully gotten the cops to throw this case out, write it off as a suicide.

He picked up his phone and dialed a number. The call picked up after three rings.

"Hello?" The half-asleep voice of Detective Mason Strauss came through the phone.

"Good evening Detective," the killer said. "I was calling for an update,"

"I have reason to believe that the fiancée might not accept the suicide ruling so easily," Strauss said. "She may try to actually investigate the case on her own."

"Well, don't let her. I can't get caught, remember? You don't get your money if I get caught. I'm paying you to help me get away with murder, not to get arrested."

"I told her, sir, that if I saw her anywhere near this case I'd arrest her."

"Make sure you follow through on that if she is indeed investigating."

"Of course, sir."

"One last thing," the killer said. "She won't be able to get to a lot if evidence on her own. She may be working with another detective. Keep and eye out for that, Strauss, and if there is a cop helping her, arrest them too."

"Of course, sir," Strauss said again.

"Then we're done here," the killer said and disconnected the call.

He rolled over on his side, closing his eyes and letting sleep wash over him.

GUESS WHO FINALLY UPDATED!!!!!!!

Sorry about the long wait, guys. I wish I had an awesome explanation for the lack of updates recently, but sadly, I don't. I got writers block, as usual, and had no idea what was going to happen in this chapter. So I know it's short, but it's pretty information packed, so I hope you can forgive me. I'm not going to promise that the next update will be soon, because last time I promised that it was almost a full month before I finally updated, but hopefully the next gap won't be as big.

Second, I'm sure a lot of you noticed that I changed the cover. I personally like this one a little better, but I wanna know what you guys think. So leave some comments and tell me which cover you like better, and I guess if most of you like the old one, I'll change it back.

Okay that's it. Super sorry again, everyone.
