Angel
It snowed about a million inches of snow last night but apparently a million inches isn't enough to cancel school. My mom decided that since I have no friends it can be my job to shovel the driveway after school.
I lied and said me and Chelsea were hanging out.
So here I am, sitting outside of Burger King, freezing my ass off, and waiting for the bus to drive by and pick me up. My teeth chatted and I watched the puffs as I breathed in and out. I rubbed my hands together, trying to keep warm. I heard the loud, obnoxious rumble of the bus before I saw it. I stood up from the bench, afraid that my legs had frozen to it when my jeans had snagged, and silently shivered while I waited to the the bus to squeak to a stop in front of me. I folded up my ticket and slid it into my back pocket.
I climbed up the steps, digging through my pocket for a bus ticket. An annoyed look settled into the features of the bus driver as I stood there fishing though my belongings for the bus ticket I had just been folding.
"Eh-em, miss?" A deep voice said from behind me. I turned and a young man held out my crumpled ticket.
"Oh, thanks," I said, smiling.
"No problem. It fell out of your pocket when you boarded the bus," he smiled in return and I took the ticket from him and passed it to the driver. He grumbled as he took it and the final passengers boarded the bus including the man who grabbed my ticket.
I fell heavily into the last seat on the bus, snuggling up to the side. The heat blasted from behind me and from somewhere near my feet and I could feel the ice melt off the seat of my jeans. Great. Now everyone is going to think I pissed myself on the bus. I closed my eyes, hoping my butt would dry, only to feel someone sit next to me. I peaked my eyes open and saw the man who had given me my ticket had sat down next to me. I quickly closed my eyes before he caught me looking.
The ride was peaceful for about 15 minutes before the man said something. I had just gotten used to the way the bus sounded and was about to drift asleep when he opened his mouth.
"Hey, don't I know you from somewhere?" he asked. I shrugged. I heard him sigh so I sat up and blinked a few times.
"I don't think you know me." I said plainly. He squinted his eyes like he was trying to remember where he had seen me.
"I've got it! You go to Canvery right?" he asked. My eyes widended in shock but I nodded.
"You've got to be a Junior or a Senior right about now. I graduated last year and I remember seeing you around." the look on his face was hilarious and so was his reaction. If I had graduated and seen someone who used to be an underclassmen I would ignore them.
"Junior. I don't remember seeing you around though. Who are you exactly?"
"I'm Sam. You're Hailey?"
"Hannah. But close enough." I could feel my eyelids beginning to droop.
"Oops, my bad," he apologized. "What are you doing out of school?" I closed my eyes and rested my head against the cool side of the bus.
"Skipping. Duh." I heard him chuckle but say no more.
I drifted in and out of sleep for the rest of the ride. Each time a person got off more loud people got on and would wake me up. After a while I just stayed up and waited for my stop. Sam never got off at any of the previous stops but he stayed pretty quiet while I slept. I faked waking up from a deep sleep and nudged him to move.
"This is my stop." I said tiredly, wiping my eyes. He nodded and got up.
"You should call me sometime. Maybe we can hang out." he blushed and handed me his number. I smiled and took the paper, quickly getting off the bus.
I stood at that corner for what seemed like forever and waited for the bus to drive out of view. Inside I was exploding.
