Chapter 2 - "New Found Discovery."
He gave me a gentle smile and glanced down at his shoes. "..Beautiful name for a beautiful girl."
I felt myself blush a deep crimson red as I gazed at him through my lashes. It shocked me how straightforward he was. There was no embarrassment on his face, and no shame in his tone. Infact, the way he said it was almost like it was a simple observation.. A fact.
I noticed the dramatic change in his mood when he's eyes returned to mine, he went from calm and collected to very stern and serious in a matter of seconds - I probably would have flinched if I wasn't so aware of my surroundings. He slightly cocked his head to the side, his eyes doing a quick examination of my body before the green orbs returned to mine.
"Can I ask you a question?"
I hesitated, but slowly nodded as he inched closer towards me. He nervously glanced around the hospital room as if he was about to tell me something extremely secretive that he didn't want anybody else to hear. "Do you.." He began, but trailed off, shaking his head as if debating on the question he was about to ask me. I instinctively nodded, urging him to go on - though I was unsure if I even wanted to know.
"Do you snore?" He quickly mumbled, giving the nurse that placed a tray on my cabinet a side glance. I started to laugh hysterically, making the corner of his lips turn up. He watched me intently as I continued to laugh, leaning on the wall behind me for support.
"I like your laugh." He whispered, his smile widening. His compliment caused me to muffle my laughs by placing a hand over my mouth. I hated my laugh for the life of me, I had done since I was very young. He laughed along with me, probably at my shyness and how easy it was to get me embarrassed. A question came to mind when the laughter slow down into a peaceful and comfortable silence.
"You never told me why you're here." I reminded him. His smile faltered for a second, and his eyes were much more focused than before. He bit his lip but never took his gaze off of me. "Let's not talk about that." Though it seemed I could have persuaded him right there, the tone of his voice told me that it was more of a statement.
Let's not talk about that.
We're not going to talk about that.
I couldn't help but feel a little betrayed when he said that. Surely, it'd only be fair if I told him my story, he should tell me his. I saw the new look in his eye, though. He lifted his eyebrow slightly, daring me to push the subject. I gave him a small and forced smile, concluding that his situation was probably really personal to him. "Mr. Millian?"
Trevor's head whipped round at the sound of his last name. A nurse stood with a man by her side, who looked in his late forties. As soon as he caught sight of the man he looked back at me, a stone cold expression on his face. "I don't want to talk to him." Trevor stated in a dark voice, one that sent goosebumps all over my arms and a shiver down my spine as he maintained eye contact with me. "Son, it's important for you to take your m-" The man began, a tired look on his face like he hadn't slept for weeks at a time.
Trevor silenced him with a swift and menacing look. He laughed.. but it was different kind of laugh than when he was chuckling with me. It was a sarcastic laugh full of poisonous venom that the sound literally dripped with it. I frantically glanced at the two back and fourth, not liking where this was headed. "You can't tell me what I can or can not do." He said, his voice never wavering. He gave me a look of mixed emotions which I couldn't recognise no matter how hard I tried to interpret them. The nurse placed a comforting hand on the mans back before ushering him out of the ward, the look on her face revealed that this was something she was very use to.
Trevor didn't even glance at where the man previously stood to check if he was still standing there and reached a hand out, grabbing my chin easily in a tight grip. He stared so deeply in my eyes that I could of sworn he could see right through my soul. With concentrated eyes, he scanned my face using his thumb to feel the skin of my cheek. I felt myself give into his touch, my back instantly relaxing though the reason why remained unknown in my mind."Beautiful, beautiful Leah." He whispered softly.
He released the grip on my chin, slowly swinging his legs back over to lay on the bed, his eyes never leaving my face. I also copied his actions, and pulled the book from my bag, looking at him in the corner of my eye before turning to the page I had got up to. As much as I read the same sentence over and over again, I couldn't seem to concentrate on the words of the book and instead could only wonder who that man was that Trevor hated so much. I knew it was most likely that the man was Trevor's dad judging by the way he spoke to him.. but then again, I've only knew Trevor for two minutes.
God knows how he spoke to other people.
He seemed nice enough to me, that is.
Still not being able to connect the meaning of the words together, I gave up after a measly six minutes and decided to rest my head for just a moment and close my eyes. Not knowing that just two minutes later I'd fall into a deep, well-needed sleep.
-
"Hey, Leah!" I heard someone grumble in a whispered tone.
My eyes shot open to see Trevor leaning over me, a curious look on his face.
"What's wrong?" I murmured tiredly between a yawn. Trevor didn't reply, nor did he move. He was so close that I felt his hot breath on my neck. Trevor grabbed my hand and pulled me up effortlessly. I immediately placed my feet on the ground so I didn't fall off the bed and he began to pull me through the corridor. When we reached the double doors that were locked I watched him carefully as he sighed deeply, his hand still tightly gripping on to mine.
Suddenly, we heard a voice echo through the speaker connected to the door.
"Is there a problem?" A woman spoke.
Trevor shook his head, staring at the camera that I hadn't noticed was at the top of the door. "No, Leah and I would like to go to the hospital cafeteria." The woman must've left her mic on, because shortly after Trevor spoke the sound of a keyboard could be heard. Approximately two minutes later the door clicked open, Trevor grabbed the door handle and continued to pull me through the next corridor.
I didn't really know what to think. Trevor doesn't even know my last name and here he was, a death grip on my hand as if I were a small child that needed to be disciplined. Admittedly, after getting to know Trevor better I think it was fair to say that I was wary of him. I did find him very flattering, though. No one had complimented me that much in my entire lifetime, let alone in the first few minutes of meeting them.
Trevor was extremely good looking. He had olive tan skin, contrasting well with his brown hair that somehow looked messy yet perfected in every way possible. His striking green eyes and pale lips enhanced his strong jaw line and muscular figure. I couldn't help but feel pathetically intimidated by his charming smile and good looks. I know I must've looked like hell. Trevor continued to walk until we finally turned the corner into the cafeteria, that was completely empty. Trevor pulled me over to the table nearest the canteen, and gestured for me to sit down.
After I obliged I glanced around the cafeteria, taking in my surroundings. I frowned and looked at Trevor. "Where is everyone?" I asked him. He gave me one of those smiles that you could just drown in. "It's 4:00 AM." He told me with a shrug. I wanted to question him further, but I decided against it.
"So, what do you want from the canteen?"
Knowing that I couldn't stand hospital food, I decided to just have a drink. "A glass of water, please." He rolled his eyes, not once letting the smile leave his face as he turned back and walked to the canteen.
