1 hour earlier:

As I neared the clearing I was violently thrown into a tree. I nearly passed out from the shock. I looked at the perpetrator. It was another wolf with a black coat and bright, blue eyes. My first instinct was to stand back up and take a fighting stance against the other wolf. It was probably just some random wolf. Like actually animal wolf. Maybe I should go easy on it. It was probably just protecting its territory from intruders.

My rational side said to not go looking for fights against untrained wolves, but my irrational side said fuck it. Oh well, I wasn't being rational at all today, and really; what was stopping me? My mother? No. My brother? No. My father? Definitely not. There was nobody controlling me. I could finally do what I wanted and not what my family told me to do. I felt like an invisible barrier had been lifted, allowing me to do as I please.

I bared my teeth at the other wolf and growled. I was met by a low growl that sent shivers down my spine. So what?, I thought. Nobody could beat me at raw combat. After all, I had been trained by the Alpha of my pack. Plus, it was just an ordinary wolf; it wasn't like there were other werewolves in the world.

The black wolf crouched low. Before I knew what was happening, I felt a stinging pain in my shoulder. I howled and shook off the other wolf. How could I have not seen it pounce at me? It was as if it had materialized right in front of me. I backed away a few steps, allowing for my shoulder to heal in a matter of seconds. I ran forward with a snarl and returned the favor by biting the other wolf on the shoulder. For a moment I felt like I was winning, then the other wolf ran his claws down my fur. Oh boy, was it painful. Not as painful as getting shot, though.

I howled and let go of the wolf. I tried to run away, but I didn't get far before I was tackled by the other wolf's black form. It pinned me on the ground and bit my front left paw. Through instinct, my nails elongated and scratched the other wolf's face. It let go of my leg and I bit it in the shoulder again. I felt like I was winning, but my injured leg told me otherwise. Red seeped into my vision and clouded my mind for a few moments before I came back to my senses.

I tasted the other wolf's metallic blood in my mouth. I let go of it and walked backwards.

I whimpered.

My mind reeled at what I had just done to the poor wolf.

How could I have let my anger cloud my judgement?

I didn't hurt it badly, did I?

Why am I worried? It's only a simple wolf. It can heal. I heard my father's voice in my head, 'Don't let your emotions control you. It will only lead to your destruction.'

My head was spinning. How could I have been so stupid? The one time I didn't listen to my father I had managed to hurt an innocent being. I couldn't even fathom the disgust I had with myself. It didn't do anything to me. It was just a simple wolf, but I hurt it. The other wolf was stared at me for what seemed like hours but was only a brief moment. My head must've been guilt tripping me, because the wolf started to change form.

found myself staring at a tall, lean guy.

What? I really couldn't believe what I was seeing. I walked backwards in shock until my rump hit the tree behind me. This was unreal. I blinked a couple of more times, but the guy continued to stand there where the black wolf had been. He raised his hands in a non-threatening way towards me. "Hey, don't mo-"

There was a snap behind him. That was all it took to send me running.

Behind me I heard more dead twigs break. How was it possible that there were other werewolves? My brother, who had mentored me, had always told me that our pack was the only werewolf pack on the continent. He had told me that we were most likely the only werewolf pack, but he was clearly wrong.

Definitely.

In my dazed shock, I hadn't realized how close the other wolf or wolves had gotten. Were there more? Was it possible for there to not be more?

I had completely forgotten about my injured leg, and fell headfirst into the ground. That didn't stop me from continuing, though it did slow me down. If I didn't let my injuries heal soon, I was going to have to rely on my own medicinal knowledge in order to heal them. At least I had been smart enough to bring a first aid kit in my pack. That counted for something, right?

My stamina was running out, and I clumsily slammed into a tree. My back had taken most of the impact, but I still crumbled onto the ground.

I felt myself slipping away as I shifted back into my human form. My pack was still secured around my middle, but my clothes were another story.

My eyes felt heavy. Before I was fully consumed by the darkness clouding my vision, I felt something being draped over my naked form. It was warm and smelled like pine cones with a hint of mint.

Home, I thought, before the darkness finally took over.
