Melanie's POV

"Oh god." Melanie turned and saw her best friend taking a deep breath beside her. "Yep, I'm totally ready. I got this." She laughed at Cole as he nervously pushed his light blue hair out of his face. "Eek."

"Dude, we'll be fine," she assured him, grabbing one of her suitcases out of the trunk of her parents car. "Do you want me to come with you or do you want to go find your room alone first?"

"I-think I'll go alone at first," he said. "I kinda want to make a good first impression on my roommate? They can find out that we're basically attached at the hip later."

Melanie laughed. "Okay Ca- Cole. Shit sorry."

"Mel, it's fine. I know it's hard to remember sometimes," Cole frowned, trying to comfort her.

"It's been almost five years," she whined. "I shouldn't be doing that anymore."

He put a hand on her shoulder and looked directly at her. "Seriously Mel, it happens sometimes and it's fine. I know it's really hard to get used to. You've done really good at remembering, okay? Please don't worry about it."

She sighed. "Okay, I'm still sorry though. So which building is your room in? What floor? What's the room? We're in the same section, right?" She was soon back in her normal cheerful state, excitedly talking at a speed that probably no one but Cole could ever understand.

"Yes, same section," he laughed. "Uh, building five, floor two, where's the room number." he muttered, scrolling through his phone. "Room two-eleven."

"Okay! Why don't you go find your room and meet your roommate, I'll do the same, and I'll just appear in your room whenever I feel like it, that good?" He nodded. "Good! Have fun. See ya, friend!"

She watched for a moment as Cole turned to walk off to his building, then started walking towards the door of hers. She stopped in front of them nervously, and then pushed them open. As she walked in, she suddenly realized that she had no idea where her parents were, but they'd probably come back to the car soon and text her or something.

The main area when she walked in was large and open, with a lot of little seats and tables, although the only people sitting in them looked to be nervous students who didn't know where to go.

There were stairs and elevators on all sides, and also a few sets of stairs going downstairs. She had heard that there was a basement to each set of buildings, and there were four buildings in a set, around a shared courtyard in the middle. There were four sets of buildings, and they were evenly split between boys and girls.

She wanted to stay and look around, but she decided to go find her room first, and hopefully meet her roommate. Her room was on the third floor, and the second room. She could see the large groups of people waiting to get in elevators, so she decided to take the stairs, even though she had a lot of stuff.

The rooms were in groups of three, all around a common living room, kitchen, and bathroom. This was nice, since she didn't have to share a bathroom with too many people she didn't know. Also, she'd be forced to interact with the people in the other rooms, so she was excited. It was like having five roommates instead of one.

Melanie was completely out of breath by the time she reached the third floor, but luckily, her room was one of the first. It was clearly labeled, 'Rooms 1-3.'

She took a deep breath before pushing open the door to the common area of her group of rooms. She sighed when there was no one in it, but they were probably not there yet, or in their personal rooms. It wasn't very big, just a small fridge, microwave, and stove in one corner, a door that probably led to the bathroom in another, a rug, and a few chairs.

She found the door to her room straight ahead. It was cracked open, but she couldn't see into it yet. Her roommate was probably already there though. She stepped forward quietly, picking up her heavy bags again, and pushed open the door to her room.

At first, she didn't see anyone. There were two clean, neatly made beds, one on each side, a window with drawers below it, and shelves by each bed. When she moved further in though, she suddenly saw a neat pile of stuff leaning against the wall by the door, and a girl standing next to it, reading a book, who Melanie assumed was her roommate.

The girl was very small, she looked like she should still be in high school, and she had wavy brown hair that went past her shoulders. She looked up when Melanie came into the room, and she saw that her eyes were hazel.

"Hi," the girl smiled. "I'm Flaire, you're my roommate, right?"

"Yeah," Melanie said happily. "Yeah, I'm Melanie, I'm a freshman. Hey, um, which of the beds is yours?" She wanted to start organizing her stuff, because if she waited, it'd probably end up randomly tossed somewhere.

Flaire shrugged. "I don't really care, I waited for you to choose. It doesn't really matter to me."

Wow, Melanie thought, she's really nice. She made her way to the bed on the left, and set her stuff down to start unpacking. "Well, thanks Flaire. What year are you in, may I ask?"

Flaire had started to unpack her stuff too and put it on the shelves. "I'm a freshman, but I'm seventeen. Graduated high school early."

"Wow," Melanie was impressed. "How'd you do that? What are you majoring in?"

"I did online classes," Flaire explained. "A few over the summer too. My major is atomic/molecular physics, what's yours?"

Melanie's eyes widened. She was pretty sure she didn't even know what that was. She hated physics. "My major is social psychology. So you must be pretty smart to get into this college at 17 and major in something I've never even heard of?"

"Yeah, I guess," Flaire muttered. "So, have you like, explored this place yet? Like the campus?"

Melanie shook her head. "No, but I was planning on doing that in a moment, and visiting my best friend's room. Do you want to come? I assume you don't really know the campus yet either..."

"Sure," she smiled and jumped up from the bed, grabbing her book and shoving it in her sweatshirt pocket. "Let's go."
