"Snivellus Snape," Sirius growled.

"Simmer down, Padfoot. You know Lily is friends with him," said Remus. "It's fine."

Sirius, with his eyes wide, leaned in so close to Remus that their noses almost touched. "Is it fine, Moony? Is it really?"

He began pacing back and forth in front of the desk with his hands behind his back.

"Snape has fancied Lily for as long as I can remember. He must have found out that she was going to hang out with Prongs and then tried to delay her."

Remus crossed his arms. "I don't think so. You're thinking way too hard about this."

"I know! And I thought you were the smart one! What do you think, Peter?"

Peter stroked his chin thoughtfully, as he had seen Professor Slughorn do many times. "I think we need to ask Lily."

Sirius slapped his palm against his forehead. "Uh, no. If we ask Lily, she'll think Prongs put us up to it and she'll dump him! Poor git's been chasing after her for years and she's finally coming around."

"He's right, Peter," agreed Remus.

Sirius nodded. "Which is why we should go ask Snape himself!"

"He's wrong," Remus corrected, shaking his head. "It's like Prongs said, he's a new man. Why can't we be new men too?"

"Are you saying you want me to change, Moony?" Sirius spoke in a quiet voice.

Remus groaned. "Not this again. Sirius, I only meant tha-"

"There's a difference between becoming mature and forgetting who you are. Right, Wormtail? ...Wormtail?"

Peter had wandered off without either of them noticing. They found him sitting by the window and staring at the sky. They let him be.

"So just to make myself clear, we are not – and I repeat, NOT – going to bother Snape in the slightest. We're going to mind our own business and I'm sure he'll stay out of our way." Remus folded his arms across his chest for a moment and looked Sirius in the eye before pulling out his wand.

"Mischief Managed."

Sirius sank back down to his chair. "Why do you always suck the fun out of everything, Moony?"

"It's my job to be the moral compass. Who else is going to do it?"

"Why do we need a compass? We have the map."

"Do you really not understand the meaning of the word moral?"

"Relax, Moony. I'm only teasing. And anyway, if you're the compass of moral, then I'm the compass of fun."

Remus shook his head and went back to his textbook. Potions was a good thing to think about, after all. Sometimes it's good to distract the mind from more complicated subjects. Sirius hid his grin as he walked up the stairs, pulling his hair into a bun at the nape of his neck. He couldn't wait to collapse onto his bed and wait for James to tell him all about the date with Evans. It had to be an official date, right? And Peter... well, everyone always seemed to forget about Peter, no matter what he did. And he didn't like that.
