chapter three: the game

It was so intense. Everyone burst into action the moment Obito knocked the ball over Kakashi's head.

A girl with black hair and red eyes caught it and passed it to Asuma who grinned and began dribbling down the court.

Anko, however, was having none of that because she lunged and swiftly stole the ball from Asuma who barely had any time to recover before Anko scored.

My jaw dropped. How could they move so fast? The game raged on and all the while I hung back, staying true to my position as defence. Another boy, Iruka, also stayed back to play defence.

The ball came towards us a few times but Kakashi always managed to steal it before the other team got too close. At this point we were found to win.

But then it happened.

Kakashi made me swap out with some girl and I went to stand up by the other teams net. I awkwardly stood there, blinking rapidly as I tried to make myself useful.

Anko was looking around wildly for someone to pass to. Guy, Asuma, and Obito had her cornered and Rin was keeping Kakashi distracted. I gulped as we locked eyes.

"YOU!" Anko screamed, chucking the ball over to me. I stuck out my hands and...

I caught it.

My eyes widened and I stared at the ball in disbelief. Never have I ever caught a basketball before, especially not during a game. In my old school no one ever passed to me.

"SHOOT!" My teammates yelled. I spun around just and shot the ball towards the net just as Obito collided with me.

The mighty and victorious cries and shrieks of my peers filled the gymnasium, but I was in too much pain to care at the moment.

Obito laid on top of me. The ringing in my ears overpowered the shouts of my teammates and my arm was completely numb. The tears in my eyes blurred my eyesight. I groaned and squeezed my eyes shut as I tried to clear my head. My stomach and back ached and throbbed as Obito was lifted off me and I could feel someone gently slapping my face.

"Gah! If she's dead I'll have to do so much paperwork!" My teacher cried, sounding quite distressed.

My eyes were forcefully peeled open and I wrenched my head away, slowly sitting up on my own. As I peered upwards I almost fainted. The teachers face was mere millimeters from my own.

"Student, are you okay?" The teacher asked. I flinched. He's very loud.

"I-I..." I struggled to speak. My tongue felt like a giant sponge.

"Good job, Obito! You killed the new girl!" A deep voice—Asuma, I think—shouted.

"I didn't mean to! Oh my god—will this go on my criminal record?" Obito sounded like he was about to have a panic attack so I wiped my eyes and got to my feet.

Kakashi helped me by grabbing my shoulders. This prevented me from falling over and dying.

Obito broke through the crowd with wide tearful eyes.

"I'm so sorry! I tried to stop but it was too late! Please forgive me!" He bowed deeply and I blushed a deep crimson. I hated all the attention, plus I was embarrassed.

"I-it's fine," I mumbled, looking away. Obito straightened his spine and the teacher clapped him on the back.

"Alright, class is about to end so you kids can go get changed," the teacher exclaimed. The crowd dispersed but Obito, Kakashi, and Rin stayed back.

"Are you sure you're okay? That was quite the collision," Rin fussed over me, checking for any broken bones. She also said she wanted to be a doctor which explained her extensive knowledge on everything medical related.

We left the boys behind and made our way to the change rooms, but not before an announcement was made on the loud speaker.

"Attention, students," A female voice said. "There will be a mandatory health class after lunch for all tenth graders. Please make your way to the health room after lunch."

The speaker clicked off and Rin groaned, shaking her head. I raised an eyebrow, confused.

"Why are you sad? I thought you w-wanted to be a d-d-doctor?" I asked her. She smiled.

"I do, it's just that the health teacher is a pervert. He always tries to flirt with the girls and he makes us read his gross novels." Rin explained. I shuddered. What kind of teacher does that?
