As we wait for whatever, or rather whomever interrupted us, Michael twists his head in my direction. He had this look in his eyes, as he stares at me, that has my gut wrenching and head jumbled. It was the same look that only Ian occasionally looks at me.

And that's what scared me.

Before I know it, a large dark blur crashes through the tree lines and straight towards us. It almost stuns me when I can already sense the identity of the intruder being my mate, Ian, in wolf form.

Michael seemed almost afraid of the furious beast, but when he catches me watching him, he hides it. Instead, he shifts his feet and braces himself because, at that same moment, Ian's large wolf is tackling him towards the earth, snapping his jaws threateningly. It's a deadly sight seeing Ian attacking the only friend I thought I could trust.

Ian's wolf, a hauntingly dark creature, was actually beautiful in a sense. The way his wolf's fur reflected the rays of the sun back seemed ethereal. He was beautiful in the darkest way possible. Even in the movement of his jaw as he snapped at Michael seemed almost like an art. The bulging of his muscles behind all that glistening fur as he held my ex-friend down held power.

"Ian, please... stop," I cry out as he almost takes a hug chunk out of his shoulder. I don't know why but I felt like Michael didn't deserve it. He may have hurt and betrayed me in the worst way possible but some part of me still believed he was still my best friend deep down. He was just misunderstood and I would be wrong to want for my mate to kill him.

Ian's wolf cuts his gaze toward me with a little blood dripping from his canines. He'd bit him. I cringe at the thought of Michael, the guy I had viewed as my rock, hurt.

"Please," I beg him with tears still falling freely. But this time it was because of guilt and heartache.

Ian looks at me with his lips now covering his bloody teeth. He chances one more snarl at a defeated Michael before trotting over to me.

I can see all the emotions he always tried to hide from me swirling with fervor. He looked so hurt and defeated as he started down at me. It didn't help when he tried to nudge my shoulder with his nose. My injured shoulder.

"Ahh!" I cry out with a forced intensity as the pain that had subsided comes back full force. Fat tears roll down my cheeks as I squeeze my eyes shut and sob away. It hurt so much.

I hear the cracking of bones and shuffling before I'm picked up. "I'm so sorry, darlin'," I hear the weak voice of my mate. I bite my bottom lip to scream out my protests with the added heat onto my already scorching body. "Dammit, you're burning up," he remarks as his hand comes down onto my forehead.

I open my eyes to look up into his shifting eyes. From a gorgeous hazel to a dark obsidian and back again.

He cradled me in his chest as he looked started walking us away from the scene. As we walked he continuously asked me questions about how I was feeling and his apologies for allowing something like that to happen.

"I'm sorry you had to see me like that," he apologized. Not what I thought he would apologize for but I didn't care anymore. I just wanted to get back to the pack house and check to make sure everyone was alright.

"Are you alright," I ask after we've been trudging through the woods for awhile.

He looks down at me with a bland expression. "I'm fine. I'm just... Are you feeling fine now?"

Strange, I thought as he cut himself off. What was he about to admit to me?

"Um, yes. My shoulder doesn't hurt as much anymore," I lie through my teeth. Oh, my shoulder was far from recovering now. The dizziness of my head as my shoulder kept getting rocked with each step didn't help. Even his comforting presence wasn't helping the excruciating pain right now.
