It has been six months since the shop first opened and I couldn't ask for anything better! Business was fantastic and I couldn't quite believe the success, it was overwhelming. My mother still wasn't fully accepting of the shop but she wasn't really accepting of any decision I had made in my life. My parents are of high class, therefore expect me to be like them and be with someone who is also of the same status, when I told her about Finn and his background she was mortified. Finn was working class and wasn't handed everything on a plate, which is why I loved him because he was down to earth and was real. He wasn't living in a fantasy world and he worked hard for his money.
Business today was quieter than normal, probably due to the miserable weather. Finn was on holiday with his family, it was something they did every October, tradition and what not. When I got bored in the shop I created a game to play, I'd watch some of the customers come in and browse and whilst browsing, I'd guess who it was for and the occasion (if any), and when they'd come to purchase the item I'd ask about it if they weren't already explaining it to me. It's daft and pointless but it helped to amuse me during these long shifts. Most of the time the customers were teen girls just a bit younger than me so I found it rather amusing when males would come in, they didn't have a clue about the antiques that the shop contained, they'd just walk around the shop completely clueless until they either gave up and left or until me or Finn would go over and assist.
Today was a Thursday afternoon; Finn would be back on Monday and I couldn't wait, I hated manning the shop on my own it was never fun, I missed his company. I was reading Romeo and Juliet, the greatest love story ever told, when I heard the shop bell ring as someone walked through the door. He was a tall male, with brunette hair and he was rather attractive and as usual when browsing he, like all the other boys that have been in the shop, didn't have a clue on anything he had approached. I actually felt sorry for this one though as he looked anxious and urgent, as if he was in a rush. I decided to go and help him, I put the bookmark in my book closing it and going over to him.
"Hi, do you need any help?" I offered a comforting smile.
"Oh yes please, thank you!" he looked so relieved
"What's the occasion?"
"It's my girlfriend's birthday tomorrow and I have no idea what to get her, she always goes on about how great this shop is and how much she loves it. So I thought this would be my best option"
"OK, so is your girlfriend more of a jewellery or clothes type of girl?"
"I seriously have no idea, how bad is that? OK, right, so what would you want if you were my girlfriend, you know, hypothetically"
His words took me slightly aback, I think I actually blushed a little but I couldn't help it he was so attractive, how embarrassing.
"Well, hypothetically, if I was your girlfriend, I'd love jewellery, you never grow out of it and it can hold so much meaning, more than clothing. It shows that you've truly thought about the gift and girls tend to treasure jewellery given to them by a loved one, so yeah if I was your girlfriend you couldn't go wrong with jewellery. You know hypothetically." My statement made him chuckle a little, I flicked my head slighly for him to follow me over to the jewellery.
We stood in front of a small case. As I opened it I could feel the customers eyes upon me. I knew exactly what I was looking for. As I found it and pulled it out I couldn't help but smile as I showed him the beautiful vintage necklace with a China Rose stone, by his expression I figured he felt the same.
"It's perfect! She'll love it, thank you so much"
I smiled and nodded in response as I made my way over to the till to price it up. As I was doing so the customer continued to wander around the shop browsing the things it offered. After a few moments he made his way back to the till.
"That'll be £22.99 please" he pulled out his wallet and handed me some money. As I handed him his change I asked him if he wanted his girlfriends present gift wrapped which he had agreed to. Whilst wrapping the present, I could slightly see through the corner of my eye that he had picked something up but I ignored it.
"But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun"
I immediately turned my head to meet his gaze as he slightly waved the book I was earlier reading. I was shocked but amazed that he could quite easily quote the classic book. I smiled stupidly as I shook my head.
"That's quite impressive. My boyfriend wouldn't be able to do that in a million years" I laughed, I was truly impressed.
He smirked at my statement and thanked me as I handed him the newly wrapped gift. I watched him as he left the shop. He made a good impression and I couldn't help but think about him for the rest of the day.
