Geroux looked up at me from the floor, bruised and dishevelled. He had a certain disbelief, almost fear, in his eyes. By the time he rose to his feet, his bruises had fully healed.
"See what you are capable of?" he asked, rhetorically.
I felt really awful about what happened next. But it must be understood - I was so very upset.
"ANSWER ME!" I yelled so loudly it echoed down the adjoining halls. "Why didn't you kiss me when you first captured me?"
Geroux looked at me like I was a mad woman.
"Because you didn't want to kiss me," he replied, softly. "I don't think you understand what you are asking..."
He could tell from the look on my face that I didn't accept that as an answer, so he continued.
"Belle... you were scared. You didn't want to kiss me - at all. I would have never forced you to kiss me. Besides, it would not have been true love's kiss - so it wouldn't have broken the spell," he concluded.
Damn he was right, it wouldn't have worked. I thought about it some more and came up with another question.
"Well then explain why did you not kiss me at the ball?" I demanded. "The timing was perfect."
"If we had kissed, I believe that yes, we would have broken the spell," he began. "But then the werewolves that attacked would have killed us both..."
Annoyingly, it was all true. Every word was a tragic reflection of our reality.
"So... so what do you mean? Now that I have become like you and I'm stuck like this forever, we can never be together?"
"You said it before, we can work on this together, Belle," Geroux said, sounding almost like he was bargaining. "Then we can think about taking the next step... with us."
"And how long is that going to that take?" I asked, not expecting an answer.
I could feel an unbridled anger boiling inside of me.
I noticed Geroux was taking small, cautious steps away from me.
"Just give it time, Belle, you have to trust me," he said, calmly.
He was right to step away from me, I was strong, I could feel the strength pulsating through my body.
"I do not understand why you are pushing me away?" I shouted, still in shock at what Geroux was saying.
"No, I'm not pushing you away," he refuted.
"But we just can't be together?" I snapped back.
Geroux sighed and looked downward.
"Belle, there is a way, you just have to trust me, give it time..." he said, knowing I wouldn't accept that answer.
"Time! Time - I'm sick of waiting, Geroux," I cried. "I just want to be together like a normal couple."
He looked up at me and I was hopeful for a new answer, but all his eyes could offer me were sorrow.
"I wish those werewolves had killed us!" I yelled rather hysterically.
For the briefest moment I thought of how amazing it would feel to rip those three wolves to shreds.
Suddenly my body felt it was being pulled in ten different directions. My bones cracked into different positions, one by one.
This was it. I was turning.
In a fraction of a second I realised that I would transform into a wolf in an enclosed area, with a man whose back had already faced the brunt of my lycanthropy. I didn't want to hurt Geroux seriously again, but I was furious to an inhuman point.
So I ran.
"No Belle - don't!" yelled Geroux. I was already out of the room and running down the hall toward the front door. I could feel my body trying to turn but I fought it until I had the outdoors in sight. It was like trying to hold in a cough, but rather, I was trying to keep my entire body from becoming a quadruped.
Belle - Stop! It's too dangerous - in so many ways," he called out, but I was so far ahead of him I was hearing an echo.
"What danger do others pose to me?" I barked back. I could see the the front door and couldn't hold on any longer.
The feeling of a fire passed through my entire body. Then the most nauseous sensation of vertigo, momentarily. When I shook my head to right myself, I was on all fours. The remains of my dressing gown tore off and I pounded through the front door, barging it open.
"I meant the danger you pose to others" I could hear his voice clearly, as if it had spoken into my ear, but I was over a paddock's length away from him at that point.
Geroux was right, you do run faster on four legs.
