The bus was when she usually caught up on homework, since at home was too loud, or she would read a book. She was reading when she heard someone say, "Hi, My name is Riley. What's your name?" Marie looked up to see a blonde headed girl sitting beside her. "Marie." she mumbled, puzzled as to why this girl was talking to her. Riley then said, "I just moved into the neighborhood. I was wondering, since you look like you're popular, can I sit with you today at lunch? I want to be able make new friends if that's alright."
"I don't have any friends and I don't need any because they are useless and a waste of time." Marie said, slightly offended that this girl just assumed that she had lots of friends based off of her looks. She hoped this girl would go sit somewhere else."Oh! Well, can I sit with you still?" Riley looked at Marie with sparkly blue eyes. "You can do what you want. I won't care either way."
When lunch rolled around, Marie sat in her usual spot and expected the worst to come. She couldn't put her finger on why Riley liked her so much. 'It's going to be some sort of trick or something,' her brain insisted. 'Move to the bathroom or library while you still can.' Marie ate faster.
When she looked up, she saw Riley waving at her while jogging and trying to balance her tray. Riley sat down and said, "Aaawww man, you have a baked potato? That's one of my favorites." she then shrugged it off and took a big bite of her pepperoni pizza. She then said, "Hey, I know that we just met, but I was wondering if you wanted to hang out this weekend. I mean... it's cool if you're busy or something, but I was hoping that we could get to know each other more."
Marie rolled her eyes as she wasn't sure how to feel about this question since she still had a weird vibe about Riley. Nevertheless, on Wednesday, she told Riley yes. "Do you want to have it at my house? Because, if you do-" Riley cut her off with a loud squeal of excitement. Seeing Marie's face of judgment, she then said, apologetically, "sorry about that.... I got a little too excited."
"To be totally honest, I didn't have many friends at my old school either. They all told me that I was too hyper and seemed desperate." "It's ok! You just caught me a little off guard because I didn't know that you had such a loud voice." Marie's heart softened as she realized that she might not be that bad. They both laughed. It suddenly occurred to Marie that this was the first time that she had laughed in a long time.
