"Here are the rules," Coach Mulo said,"No punching, kicking, or anything like that. The goal is to pin the other person down on the ground, not to harm them."
I was standing on a mat in the gym facing Cormac, who was giving me a mischievous grin. Apparently it was tradition in the training center for the new kid to fight someone in their division. Mulo says it will let him know where I'm at and what I'm capable of. For everyone else... well, they'll get a good laugh.
"Kyra, are you ready?" Mulo asked.
"Ready as I'll ever be," I said, pulling down the sleeves of my black under armour.
"Cormac, are you ready?" Mulo turned to him.
"Yeah, I'm ready" he said with that same smug grin.
"Alright," he said,"Begin."
He backed off of the mat and joined the rest of the division, who had surrounded us, watching intently. Cormac took a step towards me, and I took a quick step back. I heard someone laugh quietly, and I could feel all their eyes on me. I knew that there was no way I would win this match, but I decided I wasn't going down without a fight, so I took a step closer to him.
He lunged toward me, wrapped his arms around my waist, and the next thing I knew I was flying backwards. I landed hard on my back, and watched as he turned around with him arms raised in triumph.
He had to have been a fool to think I was going down that easy.
Before I had time to think it through, I was up and running. I leaped onto his back, coiling my arms around this neck and my feet around his waist. He cried out in surprise, just before he lost his balance and we both were thrown forward.
We landed side by side- me on my back, him on his stomach. Our eyes met for a brief second before we rushed to our feet once more.
"Is that all you got, Brown," he said threateningly.
"Why don't you come find out," I teased with a grin.
He took a swing at me, which was technically against the rules, but I was able to duck out of the way. He wanted to play dirty? I could play dirty.
He grabbed my shoulder, in and effort to flip me I think, but I rolled into his grip and elbowed him in the ribs. That really pissed him off and he had my pony tail in his fist and pulled my head back so he was whispering into my ear and I was forced to stand on my the tips of my toes.
"You play dirty, girl," he said loud enough so only I could hear. Then he pushed me forward and I went staggering to the other side of the mat.
He lunged at me again, and this time I wasn't quite quick enough. He had me by the shoulders and I was forced to the ground under his weight.
I tried to roll sideways before he could pin me, but his grip on my arm was now searing and I could practically feel my skin ripping under his finger nails. His low growl was the last thing I heard before everything went black.

"Kyra, Kyra can you hear me?"
Something cold was being pressed on to my left eye. I slowly opened the right one, and at first all I could see was bright white. As I focused I could see seven curious faces staring down on me. All the members of my division- minus Cormac.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Uh," I saw Owen glace at Aiden before continuing,"Well, Cormac sort of, well, broke the rules."
"He hit you," Aiden said blankly.
"Pretty hard too, apparently," a high-pitched voice chimed in,"Back away, all of you! Let me through!"
Ms. Merriweather was suddenly above me, peering down into my good eye. She took my chin in her hand, moving my head back and forth, which hurt, but I didn't say anything. She's the expert after all.
"Don't worry," she said,"You'll live."
My head pounded when I sat up, but after a minute the pain mostly subsided. Now all that was left was humility. I had been doing good in the fight, right? I mean, is that why he hit me?
"You just need a good, long nap and you'll be good as new," Ms. Merriweather continued.
"C'mon," Aiden grabbed my hand,"I'll walk you to your room."
Neither of us said anything as we left the gym. It wasn't until we had rounded a few corners that I got up the courage to say what was on my mind.
"Where's Cormac?," I asked.
"Controller's Offices," he replied. Seeing the confusion on my face, he added,"He broke the rules, so he got sent for punishment."
"Oh," I said,"But that's hardly fair, I mean I kind of broke the rules too..."
"They'll only take away his lounge privileges or something stupid like that," he laughed,"They'll end up going easy on him. They always do. If I were them, I'd take away his cafeteria rights too. Make him eat in his room or something."
"Why?" I asked.
"Why?" he looked at me skeptically,"Just wait till you see your eye."
Great, I thought, it's just one thing after another here.
"Alright," Aiden said when we reached my room,"You heard the boss. I'll see you in a while."
I unlocked my door and made a beeline for the mirror. Aiden wasn't kidding, my eye was already a deep purple. I sighed and flopped onto the bed. My forehead was throbbing and my head was racing, but despite it all I was able to driftoff to an uncomfortable sleep.
