My life was actually going okay for once. I had a girlfriend, my grades were good, school was almost out, and we were having tacos for dinner. Everything a guy could ask for, right? Well, yeah, except for one thing. Parents. My dad was serving in the military, and I hadn't seen him since Christmas. My mom had left when I was ten for some other guy that wasn't my dad. I was living with my aunt, uncle and cousin for now, which was pretty cool. Not saying I would pick them over my dad, though. It was also really convenient because my aunt and uncle live in the same town that I do when I'm with my dad.
My uncle was a product manager for a big company in town, and my aunt was a secretary at the hospital. Their daughter and my older cousin, Audrey, is only a year older than me, a sophomore in high school. Even though she's a girl, she's also my cousin so we hang out a lot. We also go to the same school, so sometimes she'd say hi to me in the hallways. School, while we're on the subject, wasn't actually awful for once. I know, crazy, right? Most of my classes were pretty easy, and I had a lot of classes with my friends. I shared five classes with my girlfriend, Bree: Advanced Science, Geometry, Spanish, P.E., and Advanced English.
It was Saturday evening, and I was messing around on my laptop and texting Bree when someone pounded on my door and a familiar voice yelled at me to come to dinner.
"Sean, get your butt out to the table, dinner's ready," Audrey said loudly, her voice muffled through the door.
"Yes, ma'am," I yelled back sarcastically. Shoving my phone in my pocket and closing my laptop, I rolled off my bed reluctantly. I glanced in the mirror hanging on the wall, running my fingers through my hair quickly before flinging the door open and following Audrey to the table. I took my seat next to her, and she threw me a playful scowl as she scooted away from me. I snorted and rolled my eyes, and she grinned before moving her chair back. Just then my aunt came out from the kitchen with most of the food, my uncle not far behind with the rest of it.
After dinner, we were all stuffed full. I leaned back in my chair as my aunt and uncle talked, and Audrey looked over at me, glancing at her parents before rolling her eyes. I grinned but contained my laugh, rolling my eyes back at her. She jerked her head toward the living room, and I nodded.
"Um, may I please be excused?" She said, putting her utensils on her plate.
"Me too, I'm really full," I added, copying her actions.
"Sure, kiddos. Those tacos were pretty filling, weren't they?" My uncle said. I nodded and smiled politely before taking my dishes to the kitchen. I found Audrey already in the living room, sitting on one of the couches scrolling through Instagram or Facebook or one of her social medias. I plopped down in the recliner across from her, also pulling out my phone. I was just about to text Dylan, one of my friends, but just then my phone buzzed in my hand. Opening the text, I started to read it, the corners of my mouth quirking up in a small smile when I saw that it was from Bree.
Hey what's up
Hanging with Audrey. What's up with you?
I looked up to see Audrey smirking at me.
"What?" I said defensively. She just smiled wider.
"I bet I can guess who you're texting," she said in a mocking voice. I glared at her."What's wrong with texting my girlfriend? Do you have a problem with that?" I shot back at her.
"No, I just think it's cute how you smile every time she texts you."
"I do not!" I protested. "I just that wasn't expecting her to text me," I finished, putting my phone down and leaning back in the recliner as I crossed my arms across my chest. Audrey snorted and went back to her phone. Just then my phone buzzed again, and I saw Audrey press her lips into a tight line, trying not to laugh.
