Chapter 1

I was shaken awake by the human alarm, Louie. She was always up at an early time, even before the leeches arrived on Earth.

She ran into the room next door and woke them up. When she had gotten to Chris’s room, she poured a bucket of water on his head, and he got up yelling and screaming as Louie ran out of the room. They always had a go at each other, especially since Chris is easily angered, and Louie likes seeing that side to him. She always liked to stir the pot; I guess that’s why she had been a boyfriend with every guy living on this farm.

Halley got up groaning, asking herself why she was still alive. Even after four years she was still mourning her sister’s death, I tried to hide my annoyance of this. She meant as much to as she did to her, and yet we had gotten over her death. Halley had always been a bug wuss and cried at least once a day, that was before the invasion. We had to leave her at home whenever we had to go out and get food, otherwise she would break down.

We had all matured and acted like adults, except for Halley and Bobby (she is only six after all).

“Morning guys!” Kristy called out to her in her usual cheery tone. She started up the frying pan and cracked some eggs on it. She was always the optimist of the group. Whenever anyone had any doubts they went to her, and ate her cookies. She would always have to go out with us, mainly because she knows what food to buy. She had also suggested starting up a garden and breeding the chickens and cows in the back yard. Bobby helped her with the gardens and chooks.

Everyone else poured downstairs.

“Morning!” Kristy called out to everyone. I counted, only six people. I couldn’t see Seth.

“Where’s Seth?” I asked.

“I haven’t seen him since dinner yesterday,” Matt said. He was always the one that noticed everyone and kept things calm when I couldn’t, as I usually got frustrated and started yelling, mainly at Chris or Halley.

Seth burst through the window, yes the window. He was always extremely creative with everything he does, he creates the happiness and the cheer, but he also can be the one that brings us down. Whenever he gets a little bit grumpy, it gets everyone else on edge. He’s basically the inspiration to why everyone still fights and tries to stay alive.

“Okay guys we officially need more food!” Kristy called out. We all groaned. We always hated going out for food. We at least got in two fights over the chocolate and the vegetables. A different side wins every time.

“Can I go?” Jace called. He hobbled over to me on his crutches; he was shot in the leg about a week ago. Jason was always the careless one, but was a big softie. He jumped in front of a bullet to save Chris, who he has a strong disliking too.

“What do you think?” Chris snapped.

“Hey don’t shout at him! He saved your blooming life!” Louie said. She and Chris absolutely hate each other. If one chooses one side then the other chose the opposite side. Louie had realized this and gets Chris to choose the side that she wants. It’s a smart move but could easily backfire on her.

“Jace! You can’t go! What are you thinking? Are you insane?” Jane shouted. She was his big sister who was making out cake at the time of my party. She was also Bobby’s best friend every since then. She was basically the baby-sitter of all of us, but never the leader. No one was nominated leader, we all took a vote and then some people, like Logan, storm out and sook if they don’t get their way. Unfortunately we have to leave them behind.

“AAAAHHH!” Maddy screamed. I hadn’t even realized that she had left. We all rushed out to see her in the bathroom.

“No! Just Bailey!” she shouted. This alarmed me. Maddy was always very open with everyone and wasn’t easily embarrassed.

“Mads! What’s wrong?” I demanded. She unlocked the door and I walked into the room. She was pointing at the toilet crying. There was blood all in it.

“I’m going to bleed to death!” she cried. I hugged her and soothed her.

“Mel. It’s only your period,” I soothed and chuckled to myself.

“What’s that?” she asked.

“It’s when you bleed for about a week once a month. It’s a lady thing and you’re the second to get it,” I answered.

“So what do I do?” she asked. “I mean I can’t just bleed all over my undies!”

“When we go on our raid we’ll get you a thing called a pad and another thing called a tampon,” I explained. “And Jane will help you with that. For now just put some toilet paper on you’re undies and wait for us to get back.”

Relief flooded through her.

We walked downstairs where everyone was waiting anxiously.

“It’s just my period!” she declared. Some of the guys blushed and laughed uneasily, and some looked at her with confused faces.

“I guess I’ll have to give everyone the talk,” Jane sighed. She had gone through this four years ago. She called everyone who didn’t know about puberty or anything like that and talked to them about it.

Jace, Penny, Maggie, Joe and Ben stayed with me. During this time we planned our raid. It was no different to any other time. Just drive in, get our supplies and get out. Luckily for us, the leeches act just like we did. They eat sleep, drink, and poop just like we do. That means they keep the shops in good condition. They try and fight us but we always win, they don’t change their techniques. They want us alive, they need out bodies. We realised that shooting them with Mel’s rifles didn’t kill them but delayed them, which was all we needed.

We made a list of all of the things that we needed to get.

·      Chocolate

·      Flour

·      Cheese

·      Underwear

·      Pads/tampons

·      Jackets

·      Tracksuit pants

·      Chicken Stock

·      Cereal

Everything else is made at home. Milk came from out cows, eggs came from our chickens, and all of the fruits and vegetables come from out crops. Our cupboards are full of our antibiotics and medicines so we have no need for those.

Our life goes pretty smoothly. Eventually we plan to fight for out planet, but right now we can’t, we’re just children. When we get a bit older we’ll send some of us to find more people, but at the moment we just need to get on with life and train ourselves fro whatever comes ahead.

When everyone else came out we explained who’s doing what.

“Okay, Mel, Joe and Bailey are our car drivers. Mel will have the truck, Joe will have the van and Bailey will have the Cruiser. Louie, Maddy and I will go with Mel. Matt, Chris,Logan, Seth, Kristy, Penny and Ben will go with Joe and Bailey will pick you all up when you pack everything into the van and the truck. Any problems?” Maggie said. She always read out the plan. No one ever dares to argue with her otherwise she will beat them up quicker than you can say chocolate.

“Let’s do this Shiz!”
