"This was a mistake" Emily said, voice quavering. "What on earth would make you say a thing like that? During your engagement, this was practically routine!" Aiden replied, chuckling at her guilt. "He loves me, you know. He really does." she continued in a persuasive tone. "And what on earth makes you think that?" "Well," she breathed "he's shot everyone who's tried to talk him out of being with me. You, and Tyler." "Would someone who 'really loves you', cheat on you with his ex so blatantly?" Aiden countered. Emily couldn't quite fathom a response, so they sat in silence, before Aiden said, out of the blue, "Divorce him." "What?" Emily giggled "Don't be silly." "You don't love him. Divorce him. Marriage is like water; easy to come by, easier to get rid of. It's meaningless." "True as that may be," Emily countered "children are blood, and that's got to count for something."

"Look, I think I've given you the wrong idea by coming here, Aiden. Yes, Daniel and I went through a considerable rough patch not too long ago, but we're trying to put it behind us; it's best for everyone if we just stay friends this time around." She looked up at him with such a serious expression that he had to take notice. He met her gaze with a forlorn one of his own, a look of soul-crushing sadness that Emily hadn't encountered the likes of in quite some time.

A person who truly loves you will never let you go, no matter the situation, which could certainly not be said for Aiden, who'd left her more times than she could count on both handsAt least she could say Daniel had been a constant for well over ten years, through thick and thin, he'd stood by her side, which was certainly more than she could say for the man standing opposite her at that moment in time.

That's when it fully hit Emily just how much of a mistake it was; the two of them; her and Aiden; together. That's how it wasn't meant to happen. Maybe, just maybe, she and Daniel had in fact been destined for one another after all.

Yes, when Emily started to really think about it, and as much as she hated to; maybe Aiden was just one of many distractions she'd have to endure on her path to vengeance. Maybe he was just an obstacle to her and Daniel's happiness, something to be overcome in order for her to truly be happy. Alas, as much as she told herself this, and however many times she repeated this sad little mantra to herself, she couldn't see herself getting over this, or being happy. She couldn't really look into the future at that moment in time. All she was resigned to doing was feeling forlorn, until such time as she could remove herself from Aiden's presence, and truly move on.

"You know I've got to go, don't you?" she whispered, recollecting her thoughts. "Funnily enough, I had guessed, when you said you'd given me the wrong idea." Aiden stared in front of him, at nothing. He looked one hundred percent zoned out. As if he was in another place, conversing, not with Emily Grayson, his ex-lover, but with some other worldly being.

It was then that Emily finally took her cue to leave. She strode out of the building, and into the harsh embrace of the wind outside, she contemplated what to do next. She looked up and down the street, and, having been almost blinded by its intrusive headlights, hailed the nearest cab, to go home.
