Sophomore year. Thanksgiving.
Nemmi straightened out her dress for about the thousandth time as Noah restlessly told her she looked beautiful. Noah really thought she did, he stared at how perfectly the dress hugged her curves, yet decently covered enough of her to be respectable. "You're honestly putting too much effort. My family is...nothing special. I can assure you." Noah said standing up and coming behind Nemmi. He wrapped her in his arms and held her from behind the mirror, they intertwined fingers while staring at their reflection. He kissed her on the cheek. "C'mon, we'll be late." He said as he walked towards the front door. As Noah was leaving the house he heard a small crash in Jackie's room. Jackie had her boyfriend over, but having not told anyone about it didn't want to create scene. "Be quiet there almost out." She giggled as her boyfriend attempted to pull her near him. He slipped and hit himself against the door. She burst out laughing. "Bye Jackie, Bye Nate." Nemmi called from outside her door. "How did you know?" Jackie asked as Nemmi walked out. "He left his car in the driveway idiot. Love you , bye!" Nemmi shouted as she left the house.
Nemmi entered Noah's car with both anticipation and fear merging to create something she had never experienced before. "Nervous?" Noah laughed as she entered the car. He could tell she was scared and didn't want to let off how scared he was that she would shun out his family and their lifestyle. He feared she would judge him negatively, but this was a chance he was willing to take. She began looking out of the window and as she did her face glowed with the ochre hues from the setting sun, making her appear more beautiful than she usually was. "So.." He began. She turned to look at him. "Who is that Nate guy?" Noah asked trying to fill a tense silence. "Some weirdo from the botanical club, I've never actually seen his face." Nemmi laughed. Noah loved her laugh and laughed as well. They pulled up to the Martinez' residence and saw that his mother put a considerable amount of effort trying to make their small house look presentable. Noah stepped out of his car and went to help Nemmi out of the passengers seat. She stepped out with a smile. Nemmi was wondering where they were, she'd never been to this side of town before. Though she was afraid for her safety, she smiled at her boyfriend.
The house was not very big, it was a three bedroom house with a small yard in the back of it. The windows were lined with clean white frames and had a considerable amount of cobwebs on them having not been opened often. The doors were made of amber and were recently re-polished to fit the cleanliness of the gold painted, metallic door handles. The mother had put a lot of effort putting her urban edge to her husbands Portuguese origins. Noah's motorcycle occupied most of the space in the driveway as it, alongside its tools laid gracefully in front of the garage door. Inside the house Mrs.Martinez was urging Mr.Martinez to act decently in front of the guest and unlike his usual business driven self. She knew that this was to be important for Noah. She just knew it. She heard the slow rumbling of an engine and just knew that Noah and his girlfriend had arrived.
"Noah." said Noah's slightly younger step brother Jorge. Noah hugged his brother as he had just come back from his grandparents home and had not seen Noah in at least 6 months. "I missed you kid." Noah said after ruffling his hair. Jorge looked up to his older brother and smiled childishly. When Noah finally stopped embracing his brother, Jorge noticed that there was a girl standing behind him. "Hey, nice to meet you. You must be Sarah." Jorge said with a smile, Nemmi reached out to shake his hand. "Nemmi." She corrected. "Oh...I..." Noah glared at his brother, knowing that he had to explain who Sarah was when Nemmi asked about it. "Come inside." Jorge said walking towards the house. He smirked as he realized the situation he had created for his brother. Triumph.
Nemmi glanced around as she entered the house. She noticed the motorcycle that Noah usually used in the driveway, surrounded by a mess of different tools and oils. She walked into the house and was very swayed by the interior. The walls were light brown brick walls, paved into a smooth curve at the top of the home. The living room was dome shaped and had a beautiful chandelier made purely of recycled glass hung in the center of it. The couches were all velvet red, creating a deeply comforting sensation as all of the colors in the house fit complacently on the same color pallet. Before Nemmi could look any further she noticed a short black woman standing in front of her. She had a very warm, welcoming smile yet she could feel her protective nature as she saw Noah. "Noah! Estás tão bonito! É ela?" She said embracing her son and then turning to look at me. Noah kissed her gently on the forehead, "Você pode falar em inglês, por favor? Minha namorada parece muito confusa." He told his mother. His father looked at both of them disapprovingly before exiting, he trusted no one with his son's heart. Ms.Martinez stopped hugging Noah and turned to Nemmi, "Hello, Dear. I'm Joan." She said with a warm smile. Nemmi stuck out her hand to introduce herself, "I'm Nemmi." Ms.Martinez pulled her hand under her arm and maneuvered Nemmi into a hug. Behind her, Mr. Martinez stood, an overbearing and extremely tall Portuguese man, "Alfonso." He said giving Nemmi a once over and walking towards the table. Nemmi was filled with both joy and hostility, what could she expect from the Martinez family?
