"oh I completely forgot! we're both wet and its the middle of March, you're going to catch a cold! I'll walk you home." I exclaimed, my motherly instincts kicking in. I quickly stood, opening my backpack and pulling out my spare jacket I keep just in case. I tossed out to him and he put it on.
"what about you? aren't you cold?" he asked getting to his feet. he tugged the oversized jacket tighter around him. he's so small...
I smiled at his concern and helped him zip it up. "I'll be fine, I always put other people before myself. so where do you live?"
Toby put on a thinking face, scratching his head. after a long pause he said "I don't remember."
"what do you mean you 'don't remember'?"
"well mom drove me to school earlier today and now she's working. I don't remember where we live, but maybe I can call her."
"do you have a phone?"
"no, do you?"
"I left it on my bed this morning..."
"crap..."
I wonder if he trusts me enough to come over to my house?
"well, you can walk with me to my house and use mine. you can borrow some dry clothes too." I said. he gazed at me with a i-just-met-you-this-morning look. "I mean if you want!!!“ I added quickly so it didn't seem like he didn't have another option. which he didn't.
he looked a bit weary at first but nodded in approval.
"okay, I just live a couple buildings down. walking distance from here." I grabbed onto the sleeve of the jacket and pulled him along.
we ran out from under the trees and onto the sidewalk that bordered the park.
"oh I almost forgot! the weather man said there was going to be rain, so.." he reached into his messaging bag and pulled out a black wad. "I brought an umbrella!"
I was shocked. how could he forget something like that so easily? "and you're just now taking it out?!"
Toby opened it up and held it above both of us. "hehe sorry, I have a bad memory.." the smirk that played on his lips told me he enjoyed it. like making me a bit irritated was funny somehow, but for some reason, I can't get irritated at him. he's just so.. cute..
you know, you're a lot different than I thought you were earlier. you were really quiet." I pointed out.
"yeah I'm usually a really social person, but after... I moved here, I don't know anybody. so I don't have anybody to talk to." he explained to me. what's with the pause? I ignored it and led him past the grocery store next to my apartment building.
"well you have me to talk to!" I exclaimed wrapping my arm around his shoulders. he squirmed a little bit but he seemed okay with me doing it.
"we're hereee!!" I announced in a sing-song voice. I hauled him up the fire escape my apartments back door. I really don't like walking through the lobby because of Mr. Jamison, our annoying door man. he always complains and whines about muddy feet and such. plus I'm afraid of elevators.
"c'mon, you can put your things on the couch." I motioned for him to come in.
"I feel like we're robbing a house." Toby whispered quietly, tossing his bag onto the sofa.
"why are you whispering?" I whispered back, walking into the kitchen. I opened the fridge, taking out last night's roast.
"aw man, I forgot to grab groceries. this'll have to do." I mumbled to myself. I set the cold pork on the counter and pried off my wet shirt.
"Hey Toby, you can change in my room. wear anything you want out of my closet." I called into the living room area. he looked away from the old photos on the wall and his eyes locked on me. his pale face flushed red and he looked away.
"s-so why did you take your shirt off?" he stuttered.
I grinned. why is he so flattered about it? "and why have you not? your shirt is soaking wet. here I'll get you a towel, follow me." I snatched a puffy white towel out of the bathroom on my way down the hall and led him to my room.
