I stumbled back to our house, a beautiful two floored cottage where I lived Ma, Pa, and Elena, my younger sister. I burst through the door, startling poor Flo, our cat, and even rousing Rangi the dog from a deep sleep. I clomped up to my bedroom, wanting nothing more than to be alone. I was shaken and confused, and needed to sort it all out in my head for a while. But my loud entrance had worried Ma, and after just a minute, she was in my room, sitting on my bed next to me. I groaned inwardly. When would she understand that it wasn't always best for her to come in and say something when I was upset? I rolled over, refusing to speak. Eventually, Ma got the message, and crept out the room. Relieved, sat up and walked to my wall mirror. I looked in, wondering what the gods had seen in my heart to be my one true wish.

Later that day, as I made the afternoon trip to market, things were different. Fleur, the French elf, wasn't in her mother's restaurant as usual at 3:30, and Avie, who took was usually stocking up her family's shop at this time with silk and other fabrics, was not there either. John the butcher had closed down very early, and the small market stall where I bought notebooks and quills was closed as well. As I made my way through town, buying apples and other food, I couldn't help but think I had somehow caused these strange things, my imagination running wild with possibilities. Had my True Wish caused it?  It couldn't have! I made my way back home, bags filled, and wondered.
