Amanda was standing with Mrs Brenda in the library. Mrs Brenda had started to come less often to the library and Amanda was looking after the library after her school hours.
The library looked nothing like it was before. The books were all packed and sealed and put away in the right of the library. The boxes were labeled and neatly piled one above the other.
The carpenters were hustling from plank to plank. It was over a week that Irfan had left. He would call every evening. Anamda would wait till the clock to strike five so she could speak to him. They would talk about their day. Irfan would tell her he missed taking her out for dinner and the walks. Amanda would laugh and tell him to find a few in his home town. But she too misses him. Just would not revile it to him.
Mrs Brenda tugged on to Amanda's hand and pulled her out of her thoughts. Amanda looked at Mrs Brenda.
"I will be gone for two months, you have to make sure that the library is safe. When I get back have it ready. I want it to be up by easter." Mrs Brenda told her.
Amanda nodded and turned her head to look at the work going on.
Amanda wondered why had Irfan not called her today. It was past six. Every two minutes she would check her phone if it was working. The workers were paid over time to complete the work usually everyone would leave at five but they got a good amount to work till 6.30.
Mrs Brenda left and Amanda said her byes and wished her well for the journey and told her to be back soon. Mrs Brenda smiled and walked away.
Amanda heard her phone buzzed, seeing it was her Aunt Violet she sighed and answered the call.
"Amanda guess what?" She heard her Aunt shout over the phone.
"Hello to you to Violet" Amanda said.
"Amanda my baby, you won't believe what I have to tell you, why don't you come over so we can talk. And girl it is important." Aunt Violet did not only have urgency in her voice but she seemed to sound shocked about it as well.
Amanda reached to the place where she once lived with her Aunt and Alvin. The porch was still the same with small rainbow pickets that covered the boundary. The rose bushes with different colours.
Violet had made it a point that Amanda and Alvin planted the roses every birthdays, anniversaries, first day of school, on graduation day and so on. Alvin had a green thumb and he would care for them as well.
Amanda always remembered what her Aunt Violet would tell her " the fragrance of these roses reaches the soul in the heaven above. Every time a flower blooms it is an indication that our loved ones are watching over us. The rose that fades away takes away our sorrows. The breeze that sways the bushes and touches us is a way of our loved ones telling us that the love being over here with us"
Amanda went to the patio to ring the bell, before she could do so Alvin opened the door and pulled her in a hug. The house was warm and always welcoming. Amanda had always liked staying. Aunt Violet had treated her like her own daughter and never made her feel other wise.
Amanda walked in and the same white walls filled with family and friends pictures. This house always reminded her of her parents. She knew Aunt Violet took her in when her father died.
"Amanda my girl" she heard her Aunt call out. She went through the hall into the open kitchen. Aunt Violet had baked an upside down pineapple cake, which was one of her favourite.
"Hello Aunt, how are you doing?" Amanda asked while hugging her.
She smiled and replied " Just very happy"
