Author's note: Sorry about this first part. It's going to be kind of long and boring, but if you want to read the story, it's very important you understand the science. This is the most important science in the book, so i would suggest reading it.

Imagine a point is space, an infinitely small point. It has infinitely small length, width, and length. This is the zeroth dimension. If you extrude this point in any direction parallel to the point, this becomes a line segment. Line segments are only one-dimensional because their size can only be measured be length. It's width and height are infinitely small. If you expand the line infinitely, this would cover all of one-dimensional space. If you extrude the line segment in any direction parallel to the first direction, this creates a square. The square represents two-dimensional space. Squares are two-dimensional because their length and width differ, but its height is infinitely small. If you expand the square infinitely, it covers all of two-dimensional space. Take the non-infinite square and extrude it infinitely, which gives you a cube, which is three-dimension because it's length, width, and height all differ. If you expand the square infinitely, it covers all of three-dimensional space. Take the cube and, again, extrude it in a fourth-dimension parallel to the direction before. The shape you would get from this is called a tesseract. This shape is the best representation of the fourth-dimension that humans can create. Tesseracts are fourth-dimensional because their length, width, height, and a fourth, unknown measurement differ. The best description of the fourth measurement that humans can create is time. Now, Imagine a two-dimensional drawing. That drawing "lives" in the second dimension. It's able to experience both the first- dimension and its own dimension. The third- dimension experiences both of these dimensions as well as itself. There are sentient beings in the third dimension that can manipulate all three dimensions. Now think about the fourth-dimension. The fourth-dimension experiences all three dimensions and itself. Say there was a sentient being in the fourth-dimension. If there was, it possibly could manipulate all four dimensions. Time could be just like height is for humans if  there was a sentient being in the fourth-dimension. It could manipulate time, just like we can manipulate the height of things around us. Humans also are able to manipulate the second dimension with drawings and other two-dimensional things. It could be possible that if there was a fourth-dimensional being, it could manipulate the third-dimension, just like humans manipulate the second-dimension. For the second-dimension, it all exists at the same time. It's all laid in front of the third dimension. It all exists, but we manipulate it by drawing or create a visual representation that can be seen be beings in the third-dimension. The fourth-dimensional being might manipulate our world in a similar way so that it might see us, just like a drawing.
