Eric
I briskly walked through the hallway of the Emergency Room. The light inside of the hallways is brighter than the darkening, gloomy rainy day that was outside of the window.
The sound of doctors muttering, EKG machines and that smell that hospitals have, started to give me chill up my spine. As I continued walking passed people, I spotted Zaria's mom, her teacher and the doctor.
"Hey...", I said in a whisper, approaching the three.
They all turned in my direction, but I noticed Nina's facial expression more.
It broke my heart to see her eyes red, swollen as fresh tears continued to roll down her face.
"Hi...Hi Eric", her voice trembled with pain.
My jaw clenched as I tighten my lips up, trying not to let any tears fall at this moment. I can only imagine how she feels right now.
I have kids of my own and even if they get a cold, I'm going crazy to make sure they get better.
"How she's doing?", I asked in a low tone, searching Nina's eyes for answers.
From what I can read, I'm not sure if I really want to know the answer.
"Oh...Eric this is Ms. Lane...Zaria's geography teacher" she sniffled before taking a breath. "and this is Dr. Zalonski" she sniffed twice, before coughing a bit.
She aint answer me about Zaria, I thought. It must not be good.
"Yea, I met Ms. Lane at prom", I replied with a weak smile. Turning my attention to Dr. Zalonski, he extended a hand.
"Hello Eric"
I grabbed his hand, returning a firm handshake.
"Hello", I say as I took my hand back, placing it in my pocket. "How's Zaria?", I said more anxiously this time. "How's she doing...I know she's looking for me"
A look of uneasiness plastered on Dr. Zalonski's face as he pressed his lips together.
My eyes diverted to Nina, who stepped away to take a call that just came through on her cell phone.
My heart beat rapidly increased as I watched Dr. Zalonski open his mouth to speak.
He adjusted his stethoscope as he spoke.
"Well...honestly she's not doing too well now', he admitted before looking away, then up at me. "She...- "
"Is she alive?", I quickly interjected with flared nostrils.
Dr. Zalonski opened his mouth, but didn't say anything. My nerves were getting the best of me.
I didn't want to upset Nina, so I decided to count to ten in my mind.
"Well?", I questioned snottily. "You gonna say something or you just going to stand there and look at me like I'm stupid?
"Sir no need to be rude about...- "
"I asked you a simple ass question but you standing here not saying nothing!", I said in an elevated tone. "The fuck man.... this aint no damn soap opera this is real I don't need the fucking dramatics"
