-MACEY-
The dinner we had been invited to was for a wedding engagement in the family. Who’s, I didn’t know. Over the phone, Mason appeared delighted at my sudden return to his life. Unfortunately, the three of us were going to have to share a room due to a lack of space. I didn’t really understand what a “lack of space” could mean in a castle that had been standing for almost a century.
Delighted as I was, I realized we were going to have to go shopping for presentable attire. As for me, I was going to have to slip into the character of a girl Prince Mason once knew. And oh, was it going to be difficult.
I figured I could pass Zach off as a step-brother of some sort. We had the same dark hair and light eyes, though none of the same features. Kat could have easily been a relative, with her short stature and same pale, blue eyes, she would fit the part naturally.
My hands ran over dozens of textures and colors and fabrics in the small boutique we had found a little ways from England. Eyeing a deep blue gown to my right and checking the size, I put it in the pile Kat had been holding for ten minutes now. “Macey, I really don’t think you have to try all of these on.”
I laughed at her childish nature. “Oh, Kat, those aren’t for me. They’re all in your size. There’s a dressing room in the corner. Try them on. Oh, and if you need help zipping, just ask Hale!” She didn’t seem to appreciate my hint and she sauntered off in the other direction.
A steady voice came into hearing on my right, “Not to call up past events, but I think you should wear green again. It looked lovely on you at the dance sophomore year.”
Smirking, I answered, “Incase you didn’t notice, Zach, I outgrew it. Besides, no one wears green in the winter.” He laughed at that.
Becoming frustrated that there wasn’t a single dress I somewhat could see myself in, Bex came to my rescue. “Woah, there. What did these poor dresses ever do to you?” she took the fabric I was bunching up in her hands and told me to step away.
“Go to the next dressing room. I’ll hand you stuff.”
I guess Bex had never realized how different our tastes were. Not one of the dresses she forced me into was of my liking, nor complimented my features. Close to giving up, I heard her exhausted knock once more. “Try this one. Hale picked it out.”
And oddly enough, I fell in love with it.
I had never worn a completely white gown. I was always in deep colors to accentuate the paleness of my skin. But in this lacey, fitting, snowy piece, I felt like an angel. My eyes shone a shade of blue I had not yet experienced. Inky hair cascaded around it like the devil, masking my halo.
“Oh my god. You haven’t said a word about it. You haven’t even complained. Macey, show me!” An excited Bex practically tore the feeble door down. She might have, too, had I not stepped out into the middle of the room.
“You look beautiful,” a wide-eyed Kat said from across the store. I rushed over to her, examining the deep hue of blue she had put herself in. “Kat! This dress… this dress is you. I’m buying it. I don’t even want to see the rest of them.” She blushed deeply and thanked me.
I spun around, catching my reflection in the set of full body mirrors on my left. My hands toyed with the thin, textured material of the dress. I admired how easily it clung to my shape, then splayed out around my ankles.
“I should take you dress shopping more often. That smile on your face? Irreplacible.” I turned, fully expecting to find Hale joking. But the glint in his eye was more than enough to tell me he was being honest. “You really like it?” I asked, nervously tugging down on it.
