I eyed the clock all during 3rd period. The 1 and a half hour feeling like days dragging out endlessly. I hate to say this, but I actually miss the shorter class periods from middle school. It was more fun, only 40 minute classes and never having enough time to finish one test so you know what to study for the next day when you finish.
I heard the bell go off and that was my queue to stand up and grab my backpack. I sighed and quickly headed to the door before hearing the teacher, Mrs. Lauren, call me to her desk.
What are you doing, I thought. I'm busy not you, let me go. I desperately want to say this out loud, to her face. But, I can't. I tense up and walk over, smiling at her. "Yes?" I reply politely, tapping my foot. I wanted to get out of this situation fast, Angel and Abby were waiting for me to be there. I couldn't ditch them. Not now.
"I just wanted to say, I heard from a few teachers last year about...a few things that had happened. I wanted to make sure you're going to be okay." Oh no. Not this. The Miller Crisis is what she's referring to. It's not important though. Not now, anyway.
"I- um...Don't worry about me, ma'am. I'm fine." I say, smiling. Mrs. Lauren looks at me and nods. I can tell she doesn't believe me, but I don't really believe me either. Why would I be okay? I have no reason to be except maybe Angel and Abby helping me through it all. I feel my feet pull me forward after that thought passes. I remember I have to hurry so they don't leave me!
The real question, though: how am I supposed to leave the building without getting caught? I was downstairs so maybe it wouldn't be too hard. I walked out of the classroom and gazed around the hallway. Everything was going by so rapidly, I could hardly concentrate. The movement of others distracting myself from what needed to happen. I needed to get to the parking lot. Maybe... just maybe this crowd of people could actually help me.
I pulled tighter into the straps of my backpack and I forced myself through the crowd. I felt shoulders and arms bump into me, but that didn't stop me from pushing past everyone. I had no idea why this hallway seemed to be the most crowded. I hate the first day of school.
I go to the large side doors and smiled, sneaking out of the smallest crack I could manage. I turned and started to run- okay maybe not run, more like a fast jog- to the parking lot. I saw Angel and Abby talking in front of Angel's black car. A '67 Chevy Impala. Something you think would cost a lot, but she bought it pretty beat up and ended up fixing it up to look exactly like the one from Supernatural. She's such a loser.
I walk to the two of them, Angel swinging her keys around her finger through the key-chain loop. The two girls smiled at me. "Finally, I was surprised Angel made it before you did." Abby stated, sounding slightly annoyed.
"It's my car! Do you expect me to not show up?" Angel asked, trying to sound defensive, even if she was taller than Abby she still didn't sound at all intimidating or defensive. She stood to awkwardly for that.
"Whatever. Let's just go. Shotgun!" Abby called and smiled, getting in the passenger seat. Angel laughed and smiled. "Looks like you're stuck in the back." Angel laughed as she walked to the opposite side of the car and got into it. I rolled my eyes and got into the backseat, sliding into the middle. Angel started the car, it was the first time I realized she never really did her seat belt when she drove. Which was surprising because she was a reckless driver. I felt the car start moving, none of us were really buckled up.
"Hey, one of you should text Brian and tell him we're looking for his daughter." Angel said laughing.
"Why can't you do it?" Abby asked her.
"Oh I dunno...Probably because I'm driving." Angel retorted sarcastically as she pulled out of the parking lot and onto the main road.
"You aren't even buckled!" Abby laughed, shaking her head.
