Chapter one:
“He’s so cute you know, maybe I should ask him out.” I looked up from my book and put my finger between the pages so I wouldn't lose my spot, “Who?” I said really not caring who Melena was babbling about this time. “Todd, gosh, look at those arms.” She pointed at him with her stare. I rolled my eyes, “Those kinds of guys don't look at girls like us, I bet they barely know we exist.”
Melena gave me a slight shove. “Don’t be so, negative you never know, maybe one day George Thompson will fall for you.” I look over my shoulder at George, right the co-captain of the football team will fall for the president of the algebra club. George catches me looking and I look away with my face red and hot. Crap. Now he thinks I’m a weirdo for staring at him. “I mean it Kams, I heard last year he dated Mathesa Wilkerson,” Melena said as if it was the fact that would solve a 300 year murder mystery. “Science loving Mathesa, Moved to LA?” I asked not looking up from my book, “Yeah, that Mathesa.” After the bell rung I walked over to the bathroom where Ashley Jameson and Britney Jones were fixing their hair.
“Saw you making goo-goo eyes at my man.” Ashley said to me. “I was not, I was just-” “Don’t sweat it, but next time don’t be surprised if half of your hair is pulled out.” I gulped and sighed with relief that she didn’t shove my head down a toilet or something. I swear cheerleaders at Southwest High think there goddesses or something. Secretly I feared them typical “nerds” do. I clasped my books in my arm and dashed to algebra, my best subject. “Ms. Tyke is making liquid starch, if she uses one tablespoon of cornstarch per pint how much corn starch does she need to make a cup?” Mrs. Granderson said reading a question from our hand-out.
My hand jotted up “Loser,” Someone said in cough talk. I turned around to see who it was. Why do i even bother? I’m used to it anyway. As I finished my math I saw George struggling with his math. I wanted to ask him if he needed help, but I didn’t want to end up half bald so I sat back and dug myself into my book; books are like an escape from my crappy world. “Ugh, Kams shut that book. “ Melena said waving her hands in my face. “What do you want?” I asked. Melena ran her tongue along her braces. “I’m going to ask him, if it’s the last time in do!” She said waving her finger in the air. “I could set you up with George.” She added. My face burned angrily. “You can live your fantasy with Todd, but I don’t leave me out of it.” Melena rolled her eyes, while she put her chin in her hand and day dreamed about Todd.
Melena is prettier, and a lot more boy crazy than I will EVER be, I guess it’s because I’ve never dated. I’m a junior in high school who has never had a boyfriend, that’s really something to be proud about. Not. I shut my book and glanced at George, ugh I hate “jocks” who think they’re so cool, sometimes I just feel like stabbing all of them, but of course that would put me in jail so I keep my thoughts at home. As the bell rung Melena dashed over to the bathroom with me. She stared at the mirror and fixed her hair, face and clothes. “Do you have any lip gloss?” She asked me. I don’t wear any but I always keep a tube in my backpack in case I forget its picture day or something and needed some last minute touch-ups. I handed it to Melena who squirted and smothered it across her lips. “Does this look fine or do i look like a slut who is desperate for a boyfriend?”
“You look fine.” I said putting the lip gloss back. She dashed out asking me to wish her luck. “Looks like even nerds break rules right?” Ashley said smacking me across the face knocking my books down, I shoot her a mean look and pick up my stuff as she dashed out of the bathroom. Then, to make matters worse for me, the late bell rung. Oh crap, I can’t be late I ran out of the bath room the hallways empty “I can’t be late, I can’t be la-” Before I knew it my glasses hit the floor cracking the lenses and smashing the “legs”. “Oh crap, my fault, my fault!” A familiar voice said while picking up my glasses from the floor, George Thompson. Everything was blurry. “Its fine,” I said trying to reach my glasses but I missed George’s hand. I felt his hand gently move mine to his so I could grab my broken glasses. “I knew that.” I said snatching the, and putting them one even though they were cracked and broken. “I could buy new ones, I’m rich it won’t be too much trouble.”
There was no way I could accept that. “No, No it’s fine.” “What? Nope I’m getting you new ones. What’s your eye doctor?” I answered back glumly and wished this day never happened.
I down sadly at my glasses and called my mom to pick me up. “What happened to your glasses?” I tried to change the subject but my mom gave me the stare. “This guy broke them, don’t look at me like that, i hate it, it’s weird.” My mom waved in finger in the air. “Wait I find out who that boy is, I’ll sue his little as-” “Mom, he’s getting me new ones, chill.” My mom is this crazy rich lawyer who loses about 4 out of 2000 cases. She straightened up her spine, my mom is the total opposite of me, beautiful, rich some people even think she’s my sister not my mom. “Very well, but make sure to let him know I’m a lawyer, and your father is a cop.”
I rolled my eyes and stared out the window. Suddenly my phone rang. “Mel?” “Ohmigosh! He asked me out, he said he loves braces, and smart chicks, ohmigosh I’m dating Todd, a football player.” Melena sounded so excited it sounded like she was going to barf. “Mel! I’m so happy for you! Is your lunch still in your stomach?” “Not for long! Got to go.”
“Why was your cheeky friend screaming about?” My mom asked me. “She’s dating a football player,” “Maybe if you got your hair out of those braids and contacts maybe you could get a boyfriend.” I turned around quickly and looked at my mom. “So you think I’m ugly?” I asked, “No, just below pretty.” I scoffed that’s just what I need, my own mother insulting me. I hopped out of the car and immediately started my math homework. I looked in the mirror with my broken glasses and laughed. I look so retarded. Hopefully George will get me my glasses as soon as possible.
After school I stayed for my algebra club meeting and saw George with Ashley and Brittany
“Hey baby,” Ashley said walking up to George. “Oh hey babe.” he said giving her a usual kiss.
Ashley and George have been dating for 8 months and plan on going on even longer. George pulled out his phone and began to put in someone’s number, to be honest he's not that bad. Ashley batted her long eyelashes and looked over his shoulder tiptoeing. “Whatcha doing?” She asked.
“Putting Kamber Kelin’s number in my cell phone see I-” “Ohmigosh! Kamber Kelin with the blonde side braid, glasses, braces and cute clothes, not important, any way the geek?” Ashley asked sounding offended. “Um yeah, but listen, I bumped into her and broke her glasses so I-” “Ohmigosh! Good job! You broke that stupid nerd’s glasses.” He rolled his eyes and held her shoulders. “I’m getting her new ones I felt bad, okay?” Ashley scoffed. “Whatever, I’m late for practice.”
