School secrets

Melody's POV

"Melody" I hear, I look behind me wondering who in this entire school could know my name. Panic sets in.

Then I see a face I have been trying to avoid seeing again in my life. The face if the ex-best friend who I avoided for the last three years, Joey travers. I do now what I did then. Avoid him.

As I am about to walk off and avoid a serious awkward conversation, I catch a pair of brown eyes staring at me, and I look at their owner.

A boy with brown curls and a tall build, wearing jeans and a blue t- shirt. Joey's friend.

"Cherry? Skye? We need to go. Like now!"

My "sisters" cherry and Skye look at me like I'm crazy. "Look let's go home. I'll you then."

(Three hours later)

"Okay explain" Skye demands with her hands on her hips.

"I saw Joey. And he recognised me."

"What! Wait like THE Joey. Ex best friend Joey?" Cherry chips in.

"Yeah. And he can't find out. I can't get close to him again. It needs to stay a secret." I say.

Nobody can know our secret. No one. Cherry Skye and I don't have... Normal upbringings. Like we were all adopted by the same couple two years ago.

Skye's parents died in a car accident three years ago. Leaving nobody to take care of her, so that's where our "parents" Julie and Patrick came in.

Cherry had a normal life until two years ago. She found out one night that get mum and dad were not her real parents. So she ran away from home. She was taken in by Julie and Patrick too.

My story is a bit more complicated. My mum and dad and I were a happy family. Once. Then my dad started staying out late, getting into fights, slapping mum. Until one night mum fought back. He beat her to death. Then came for me. I was in hospital for three months. Then Patrick and Julie took me in.

You see. Then we wanted a fresh start and moved here, two weeks ago. And no one can find out why.

"How did you fall out again?"

Cherry asks. "You never told us."

I take a deep breath, and start. " Joey and I had been super close since the start of high school, best friends. I told him everything. About my dad hurting my mum. All of it. Until one day he told me he was moving. I couldn't risk telling him anything else. You know how change scares me. You two know how much It takes for me to finally open up to people, so I..."

"You cut him out didn't you?" Skye says softly giving me a hug, wiping away tears that I didn't realise had fallen.

"Hey" cherry starts "it's gonna be ok melody! Maybe you won't have to talk to him, he may not even try to see you!"

She's trying to cheer me up. But it doesn't work, Joey would never ignore me, not like I had done to him. He was gonna talk to me, ask me how mum was, if dad was worse.

I don't think I can take it, telling him mum died the week after he left, or how dads in prison. I can't talk to him like old times. I can't open up to him again.

Not when there's so much to lose.

"Yeah cherry, maybe your right" I lie.
