Chapter 10-June 2010
Tap! Tap!
What was that? The sound was coming from outside.
Tap! Tap!
I sprung out of bed and rushed to the window. A few feet below, tangled in Mother’s roses, stood Chase, holding up a handful of pebbles. Opening the window, I whispered,
“What are you doing here?”
“Take a guess, Jewel. Would I be here to see you by any chance?” he said teasingly.
I rolled my eyes.
“Yes, but why tonight? I swear, if Father sees you, or Mother ever hears that you touched her roses…”
“Don’t worry. Besides, it’s a special day today!”
I grinned.
“You remembered?”
“Of course I did. Now come on. I’ve got everything planned out.”
“What do you mean, ‘Come on’? I can’t leave the house without someone noticing. Do you really think they won’t hear the door open?” I asked.
“That’s why I’m here. So I can catch you,” he replied.

“Hello beautiful,” he said. “I’ve missed you.”
“We saw each other yesterday.”
“I still missed you,” he said.
“I missed you too,” I replied. The funniest part was that it was true. I looked at him. His usually messy brown hair had been combed neatly and he was wearing a suit.
“What’s with the fancy clothes?” I asked.
“We’re going dancing!”
“No way!” I said, beaming. This was a dream come true. I felt like I was in a fairy tale, where the prince takes you to the ball on his white horse to save you from the evil king and queen inside.
“But… What am I going to wear?” I asked, glancing at my skimpy pyjamas.
“That’s all settled,” Chase replied. He pulled something out of his bag. I couldn’t see much under the pallid moonlight, but it looked like a very expensive dress, midnight blue and probably satin. A pair of glossy black heals followed shortly after.
“You shouldn’t have,” I said.
“But I did,” he grinned.
“No, but really Chase, this is worth a fortune; you probably saved up all year for this and—“
